Here's some of what the Gardaí's animals got up to last year

Details are revealed in the force’s annual report.

THE GARDA DOG Unit assisted in over 100 drug seizures last year, the force’s annual report details, with two of these resulting directly from the indication of a dog.

Garda Dog Ben found €35,000 worth of ecstasy tablets and cannabis at a premises in Ballymun, north Dublin, while an indication by Garda Dog Flynn led to the seizure of cocaine, ecstasy tabs and marijuana in Cabra late last year.

A dog also assisted in an arrest in Dublin city centre after a shop was robbed and a staff member assaulted with a baton.

Another helped arrest a suspect who had shone a green laser directly at the garda helicopter.

Other duties included explosive detection, vital during the EU presidency, and public order support at major events.

These are just some of the incidents that the unit was involved in.

They have also been involved in search and rescue operations.

There’s also Garda Dog Fiachra, who you might remember for his horse-walking talents.

A garda horse was involved in a pursuit down a busy city centre street last year.

The incident occurred on Grafton Street, and resulted in the arrest of a suspect accused of robbing a mobile phone from a youth.

The Garda Mounted Unit ‘pursued, located and searched a person’.

However, the unit is mainly noted in the report for it’s “pivotal role” in crowd control situations.
