A DOCTOR HAS hailed the successful delivery of a premature baby from the womb of a woman fatally wounded during an Israeli airstrike as a ‘miracle’.
Medics carried out an emergency C-section to save the baby’s life after her mother died on the operating table.
The 23-year-old woman was killed after the airstrike hit a house in the central Gaza town of Deir al-Balah.
According to Al Jazeera’s report on the attack, there were four families inside the two-storey building when it was struck in the middle of the night.
Dr Fadi Al-Khrote, one of the medics who saved the baby, said he believed “what’s happened is a miracle” as the infant’s mother had been dead for around ten minutes before the operation could be completed.
He said it was generally the case that if the mother was dead for more than five minutes, her baby would die too.
The little girl’s chances of survival are rated at 50/50 by the doctors, according to the BBC.
US Network ABC News reports that the child’s father, who is believed to be associated with the group Islamic Jihad, has gone into hiding.
The strikes took the Palestinian death toll in Gaza since Israel launched its offensive on July 8 to 865.
Rockets and mortar rounds fired into Israel have killed three civilians — two Israelis and a Thai farm worker — and fighting in and around Gaza has killed 35 Israeli soldiers.
Human rights watchdogs say that some 80 percent of the Palestinian dead have been civilians, many of them women or children.

@sean mahony. Do you know that for sure? And if you’re right do you think it might have anything to do with the fact that she was torn from her mother’s womb after her mother was killed by the IRD? I have read extensively in the last number of years, mostly from Israeli citizens, about the inherent racism they grow into against the Palestinians. They themselves have noted the irony of the propoganda they’re spoon fed by their own government, given the recent heritage of their country and it’s most recent origins. I think you should do a bit more research into what is going on in that part of the world before making sweeping general comments like that.

I had been looking back this week with an air of nostalgia thinking about how my mum 30 years ago brought me to the Dunnes Stores pickets and protests against the injustice in south africa, toying with the idea of bringing my little girl to the protest tomorrow in O’Connell street.
After reading about this crime against our very humanity and the hope we should hold for this poor little thing, I’ll proudly bring my little girl along tomorrow. Please God this little baby survives, and I can will tell my little girl in years to come about our day out marching for the children of Gaza.
Fair play to your mum, and, like you, I hope this little child survives. And not only survives, but may she grow up in peace, freedom, harmony and prosperity!

Thank you, Tom. It’s ignorance like that which allowed the Belfast synagogue to be attacked over the weekend. We in the West condem the Israelis and vent our anger against all Jews and then wonder why they flee to Israel and acquire such staunch views. Look at the articles on this very site about how Jews live in Ireland which were published over Christmas. It had nothing to do with Israel, yet the comments turned into a veritable Jew-lynching mob blaming all Jews for Israel’s actions against Palestinians.

Various groups here in Seattle are having marches, rallies, peaceful protests of all kinds (including concerts) practically every day till this insanity stops. A great many organizers of these events are Jewish people and orgs who are horrified at what is being done by Israel in Gaza; and you kind of have to reassure them that they’re not guilty by association.
In any case, they will tell you that it is NOT anti-Semitic to criticize Israel and hold it accountable for its actions. Plus, it’s taken me awhile; but I simply cannot believe all the “human shields/self-defense” propaganda anymore–the entire premise is completely absurd any way you slice it…

Point well made. Truly the only way to hit Israel where it hurts is to boycott Israeli goods. Go to any of the solidarity with Palestine websites and get the list of companies. The Irish hate to make a fuss. I can understand that. But the dunnes workers did phenomenal work with apartheid in South Africa in the 80s. We can fight this injustice in the same way. Educate ourselves and fight these war criminals on the balance sheet
