Here’s how fighting in Ukraine is holding up the MH17 investigation

Again, fighting in the towns around the crash site made it impossible for Dutch and Australian authorities to get to the wreckage today.

ZURAB DHZAVAKHADZE / ITAR-TASS ZURAB DHZAVAKHADZE / ITAR-TASS / ITAR-TASS

TWELVE DAYS AFTER the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down, international authorities still have not been able to get to the crash site to facilitate an investigation aimed at finding out exactly what happened on that day 298 people lost their lives.

Plans to send Dutch and Australian authorities to the area have been scrapped for a third time today and many of the victims’ remains still have not been even been removed from the site and returned home.

So, what’s holding it all up?

The area where the Malaysian Airlines flight came down in Ukraine is near the Russian border, where there have been raging battles between Ukranian forces and pro-Russian rebels. Over 1,000 people have been killed in the fighting since it kicked off in mid-April.

In the first 24 hours after the plane was shot down over Ukranian airspace, pro-Russian separatists who are controlling the area pledged to allow international investigators onto the site, as both sides sought to blame one another for bringing it down.

Though some work was done in the first couple of days to mark out bodies and recover the black boxes, reports from the scene indicated the operation was sloppy at best.

Two days after the disaster, separatists forces were blocking access to the site for Ukranian investigators and international observers.

Bodies recovered from the site were initially removed by rebels to an unknown location but a deal was later reached to hand over remains to the Netherlands. Rebels also agreed to give the plane’s black boxes to Malaysia.

Last Friday, a small group of Dutch and Australian investigators were sent to the site, accompanied by observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

However there was no large-scale deployment of experts or security personnel and the site today remains largely unsecured.

Some family members also visited the site, like Jerzy Dyczynski and Angela Rudhart-Dycynski, whose 25-year-old daughter Fatima was a passenger:

The couple, who live in Australia, crossed the territory held by rebels to reach the wreckage.

On Saturday, Australian Prime Minsiter Tony Abbott said there are still human remains at the crash site. He told reporters that 190 Australian police would join a large-scale Dutch operation to secure the remains and help the investigation, stressing that it would be a humanitarian mission.

However, a day later, plans to visit the site were scrapped over security concerns.

Alexander Hug, deputy chief monitor of the Organization for Security and Cooperation commented:

There is fighting going on. We can’t take the risk. The security situation on the way to the site and on the site itself is unacceptable for our unarmed observer mission

Kiev said yesterday its troops had entered a string of towns around the scene of the Malaysian airliner disaster, including Shakhtarsk which lies 10 kilometres away.

Reuters / YouTube

There were plans yesterday and again today for authorities to go to the site but fighting on and around the road to the crash made it too risky.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has called on the Ukrainian president to ask forces to halt hostilities in the area.

However the Ukrainian military confirmed that violence is still raging today, with pockets of insurgents continuing to fire on Ukrainian positions in nearby towns.

The corridor that they are using is slowly getting closed. And the Terrorists are getting more shrill in their cries for direct Russian intervention. Putin is happy to deny any involvement at present but by Direct involvement is an act of outright war. And I don’t think the West will stand by and just watch this time like they did with Georgia.

And when enough proof comes from the investigation to say yes the plane was shot down by an SA11 missile and it was fired by the Terrorists. He will do it to you all again. And say “Yes the Terrorists shot it down but it was a case of mistaken identity.”

But you understand this question should be considered in the following context. Ukraine well in advance received information that the Rebels, because of Russia, had this kind of weapon.” -Aleksandr Khodakovsky

I’m no expert but going by what this article is saying (i’m open to correction) that this area is controlled by the rebels, who want to be Russian.

Yet there is fighting going on in this area

So shouldn’t the Ukrainian army and Kiev stop its soldiers and let the investigation happen. They seem to be engaging with the rebels and essentially delaying the investigation from happening.

Normally I would agree, the main issue though is that the MH17 crash site is quite close to the Russian-Ukrainian border. The rebels have been receiving a steady flow of weapons and fighters from this border area and sealing it is essential to their ability to end this civil war quickly.

While the families of MH17 certainly deserve justice, closing the border would mean a swift end to the war and many lives would be spared.

@ Jason Culligan..In your expert opinion which you freely gave, you claimed a SU 25 could not reach the altitude at which Flight MH 17 was shot down. So, in your opinion what would explain the 30 mm cannon shell holes found in the fuselage. The Flight Data Recording on the aircraft is NOT the important one. It will have a CAS or a conflict alert warning but may not have the id or trajectory of the object in conflict. The ATC facility tape of the PVD (plan view display with digitized data blocks of all the aircraft) which is saved for two weeks NORMALLY is where the true evidence is.
That’s why the Russians don’t care about the Ukraine army taking the crash site, the PVD data was recorded by China, Russia and about ten other nations. America and Kiev really should have cooperated in the reporting of what was seen.

What a bunch of hypocrites, the US and many of those supporting the sanctions against Russia for supporting separatists were the very ones who supported the separatists and the breakup of former Yugoslavia as well as turning the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) who were officially on the international terrorist list into freedom fighters.

They also supported (morally, financially as well as with weaponry) the campaigns against Saddam Hussein, Muammar Muhammad and Bashar al-Assad. All of these countries that are now in turmoil with civil wars raging and no peace in sight but there is no stomach to demand that the Israelis and the Palestinians agree to a cease fire.

The US and the EU say that it is very hard for them to bring the two sides to the table and to agree on a ceasefire and a lasting peace. Why not impose a Rambouillet style peace proposal where they are forced to accept an imposed peace or face the wrath of NATO like they did with the Serbs and the Kosovars?

It is the Ukrainian government that is on the offensive and destroying all that are against them using artillery tanks and aircraft and the West are not saying anything about it but instead are calling them terrorists. We are talking about the elderly, women and children being killed just because they wish to separate from a country with which they feel no bond.

The West has supported these kind of movements in the past but this time around they are saying nothing but providing weapons, money and training for the Ukrainian government and then trying to blame the Russians for the mess that they have created.

Why also no news about a U.S. Congressional report reveals that the America military has stockpiled in Israel $800 million worth of Israeli weapons for emergencies.

The equipment originally stored in Israel was worth approximately $100 million, but it grew to $800 million in 2010. An amendment to a Congressional law allows the value of the emergency cache to be increased to $1.12 billion.

The equipment was transferred to Israel for use by the United States in case of war, and Israel may use the weapons in case of emergency and with American approval.

‘There have been two or three fuselages that have been really pop? marked…. gun fire, very, very strong machine gunfire that has left these unique marks that we haven’t seen anywhere else. We were also asked for example if we have seen any samples of missile, no we haven’t is the answer… ‘
