Young faces of war: Syrian children bereaved, homeless and losing hope

When will it stop? Syrian children killed, injured and left homeless as conflict continues.

GAZA, IRAQ, SUDAN, Afghanistan and Syria.

The number of countries where children are dying, suffering horrific injuries and losing their homes should be startling.

But it’s not. Conflicts in the regions are becoming mainstays in bulletins and on world news pages of our newspapers. They are often among the lesser-viewed articles on this website. A fact explained maybe by their consistent presence?

Refugee numbers, although huge in number, are no longer shocking. Charities and aid agencies try and shout them from their rooftops, look for urgent appeals and beg governments for extra funding.

The message doesn’t quite hit.

Associated Press photographer Muhammed Muheisen, as only photojournalists can do, is trying to get pictures to tell those thousand words.

On a recent visit to Jordan, he visited the Zaatari refugee camp where he saw the “horror of the neighboring country’s civil war can be seen in the faces of its youngest refugees”.

The camp is now home to over 50,000 refugees under the age of 18.

All have stories about the war. None know when – or if – they will ever get to return home.

Eleven-year-old Amal Qalloosh fled her home near the city of Daraa with her family after a government bombing.

Mideast Jordan Syrian Refugee Children Photo Essay AP AP

“On the way here, there was a lot of shelling,” Qalloosh said. “It was terrifying but we made it all safe to the camp.”

Some children work in Zaatari, while the lucky attend school at the camp.

As Muslims celebrated Eid al-Fitr this week, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, some children received new clothes from aid agencies and played.

But life in the camp is difficult, for many reasons.

“I have no more control of my children,” said Amani Sbaihi, a mother of seven whose two brothers fought with rebel forces and were killed by Syrian government troops.

They are getting old so young. It’s so difficult to have authority over them in such an environment.

These are just some of the children that Muheisen met during his time in the desert camp.

More than 2.8 million Syrian children inside and outside the country — nearly half the school-aged population — cannot get an education because of the devastation from the civil war, according to the UN children’s agency, UNICEF. That number is likely higher, as UNICEF can’t count the children whose parents did not register with it.

UNICEF estimates more than 10,000 children have died in the violence. Others suffer from emotional problems after experiencing the war.

Ireland has agreed to take in 310 men, women and children from Syria between now and 2016. A humanitarian programme has also been launched which will see Syrians already in Ireland given permission to bring over members of their family for a number of years.

Swedish House Mafia – Save The World Tonight …. Lyrics

    Into the streets
    We’re coming out
    We never sleep
    Never get tired
    So urban feels
    And suburban lights

    Turn the crowd up now
    We’ll never back down
    Shoot at the skylight
    And watching it on primetime
    Turn up the love now
Listen up now, turn up the love

Who’s gonna save the world tonight?
Who’s gonna bring me back to life?
We’re gonna make it, you and I
We’re gonna save the world tonight

    PLAY IT LOUD !

O.K. to those who are always complaining about some posters here only complaining about he horrors of Gaza – I condemn this slaughter in Syria and believe that Ireland should begin to look at offering refugee status to all the orphans of war…WE have thrown open the generosity of our social Welfare system to people who can afford a flight to London and who can then afford to travel on to Ireland but these children cannot afford to escape the horrors of war – Where’s Charlie Flanagan when you need him ?

You support Israel and yet Support the very country (Russia) that supports Israel’s two most dangerous enemies (Syria and Iran who both arm and fund another Islamist group Hezbolalla).

Actually Mick you know as well as I do the relationship between Israel and Russia is a bit more nuanced then the picture you just painted. And while I’m critical of Western policy in Ukraine, it cetainly does not mean I’m a Putin fanboy.
Mick I already explained the FSA’s complex relationshitp with Al Nusra, and the FSA also contains Islamist (JIhadist) elements. As far as I’m concerned, supporting Assad is the least worst option. The regime is secular, and it’s usually easier to deal with a secular dictator, rather then lunatics who believe they are carrying out ‘Allah’s will’.

Scipio how many times has Syria under the Assads attacked Israel 2-3? And how many times has the Assad backed Hezbolalla attacked Israel? Now how many times has the FSA attacked Israel or any Israeli?
Syria began as peaceful protests against the Assad regime. The same regime reacted with extreme violence towards those original protesters and thus the the FSA was born. And because that spineless yellow git in the White House wouldn’t aid the FSA in those early days it left a vacuum into which the Islamists saw their chance. The Islamists looked at the FSA and said they look to the West for help and get nothing. We will look to our Jihadist brothers and they will give us everything we need.
The FSA and the Jihadists spend as much time fighting each other as they do the Assad regime. But you already know this.

Why is there no “red line” as it was called then, why didn’t Cameron not put it to a vote in the house of “lords” to invade Israel like he did when Assad supposedly used the chemical weapons.

Scipio, you must be deluded if you actually believe that re Vietnam. You must be monstrously deluded. One of the attractions in Vietnamese tourism is the interrogation huts – US ones – where they bring you to show how Americans tortured and mutilated their ‘prisoners’ even while they were still alive.

I could go on and on about Agent Orange etc. …. but to be honest, suffice it to say, not a single Vietnamese is anything but proud of the fact that they drove the US out of their country. A clear and undisputed win. Go Vietnam!

You are right in one thing however, the Vietnamese are more present and future-oriented. They are that way because they have spent decades undoing the social and political divisions artificially created by the US in their country.

They do not dwell on it; yet they do not forget.

Now go back to watching ’24′ or some such deluded twaddle.

Kids are always the losers in conflict and for too long now nothing has been done.

War is all about business, America thrives on war it keeps it’s economy afloat and it allows it to justify its budget deficits year on year. Israelis wealth is why currently nothing is being done to protect people in Gaza as they have so much influence in America. History will not been kind to messers Obama Putin and co and no doubt this is all leading to something far bigger. The removal of Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq has shifted the balance of power in the Middle East. Hussein’s regime (despotic as it was) provided a bulwark against Iran and the expansion of Shia power in the region.
With the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq Sunni populations were left exposed. With the backing of Arabian gulf wealth they have aggressively taken on those powers they believe threaten them (Damascus and Baghdad regimes). For the US relations with Saudi Arabia are extremely important. Traditionally the US opted, mostly, for appeasement, but more recently relations have been more frosty. China has also been courting the Saudis. The US appears to be permitting some expansion of Shia power to expose the Saudis vulnerability and increase their reliance on Washington.
In this environment the disintegration of Syria was inevitable.
