Lucky escape for pilot, after helicopter crashes in field next to primary school

The small craft was almost broken in two, after it hit overhead lines while coming in to land.

A HELICOPTER PILOT had a lucky escape this afternoon, after his aircraft crashed into a field and was almost broken in two in Kinnity, Co Offaly.

According to witnesses at the scene, the small craft hit overhead cables as it was coming in to land next to Kinnity National School, at around 3.40pm.

The pilot – who was the only occupant – was uninjured in the incident, according to a Garda spokesperson.

The local fire service also responded to the scene.

A couple had hired the aircraft to bring them from their wedding reception to a hotel in Roscrea.

The Department of Transport’s Air Accident Investigation Unit has been informed of the crash, and is expected to carry out an investigation.

It’s amazing the way some narrow minded people trive on others misfortune. Thank god the pilot is OK.

Sorry Des , your confusing misfortune with complete incompetence. He’s fine and walked away that’s the main thing , however passing light humorous comments on the event that was essentially caused by poor judgement is hardly a reflection on how narrow minded people are . I think the pilot lost his daughter a few years ago in the air France crash, a gentleman, glad he’s ok.

Same thing happened to the Irish Aircorps on an air ambulance mission in 2012. That’s why the helicopter they use now has a cable slicer mounted near the main rotor. The National Air Ambulance Control Centre also has all ESB power lines across the country on their screen to plan ahead. Overhead cables pose a huge problem for aircraft worldwide. Glad the pilot walked away from this accident though. Could have been much worse.

The 3 guys in the yellow jackets are giving it a good wash anyway. Sure a wee polish after and it will look just grand. I wonder do they do cars also?

‘Your’ is correct in the case of Martin Donovan’s comment, but not in the case of Patrick Bateman’s, which I think is what Fergus was referring to.

Yes. Thanks Ross, but fair play to Karen for pointing out to the readers that there is two contexts: ‘your’ and ‘you’re’.

Knowing our grammar is the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you’re shit.

Esb and other above ground cables are virtually invisible to a heli pilot. You got to survey a potential landing site from the ground first if the site is not a dedicated landing spot.
