Treatment for mental illness (particularly eating disorders) in this country is desperately inadequate. Generally, a reach out for help to a GP will be met with a referral. If you’re lucky (and I mean lucky) you will get an appointment within 2 months. From there, on to a specialist in whatever issue/s are effecting you………….here you have two options. Pay a premium (and unless you are in a very comfortable financial position, this is not an option) or get put on a waiting list which usually consists of several months waiting.

What good this will do for a person at their wits end, barely functioning, self-harming etc., you can work out yourself. If you find yourself in the A and E because of said self-harm, you’ll end up having to play the usual “I’m Okay, I promise” act and go through the above steps, or find yourself getting led into a cycle of anti-depressants and prescription drugs.

People like the brave author of this piece and thousands of others are going through this constant cycle in this country. Just because people who suffer from mental illness aren’t the loudest, it doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve to be heard.

Well said. I have a family member who desperately wants help and is actively seeking it to get back to normality if there is even this for her now. She saw a consultant chap one time who spent first 10mins tidying his desk while she talked not even looking at her until she stopped talking and he stopped tidying …it’s disgraceful….

St. Patrick’s Hospital were tweeting earlier on in the week the number of beds they had available. Maybe try ring them directly? Some workplaces offer counselling through an employee assistance programme, which might also bridge a gap. Alternatively Turn2me.org offer online counselling too.

From your comment I can see that waiting is causing you great distress. I have no solution for you and will not patronise you with catch phrases.
My father had mental problems and all of us suffered. Because it seems that all you can do is wait, maybe speaking to someone regularly might ease any anxiety and frustration brought about this delay.
By writing here it must be through exasperation so I don’t know if you have already had your bellyfull of counsellors and organisations that offer help.
I feel for you and I’m sorry that I am of no use to you. I’m not religious in fact I’m atheist so I cannot even offer you a prayer. I hope you get the help you deserve and keep demanding that attention.

Aware, who help people with depression, have local groups, where you can go, everything is confidential, so anyone suffering, ring up the helpline, they are trained councillors, who will listen to you, and if you want, let you know where you can meet with people just like you. Support is there. Make that call.

Well done for your bravery. I have no doubt you will make your way through this back to full health. Life is long, we all have periods when it’s hard and the outlook looks bleak and black but it will get better, it will.

Go to another GP if you are not happy that your one is giving you the support you need. A good doctor will mind you and treat you until you move on to the next step of specialist treatment and your good GP will be there in the longer term as a support. Just as some GPs are better for treating bad knees than others also some GPs are better than others for mental health matters, it’s just a matter of finding one that’s right for you.

For the short term – if you are feeling you are at a point of it being too much right now then can I suggest to call Pieta House. I was peripherally involved in putting a helpline in place for others in my line of work and as part of that process had dealings with the excellent people in that organisation. You’ll find immediate help available with them, ie same or next day. Give them a call in the morning, they’ll see you in no time and you’ll have 15 counselling sessions free of charge, and help finding a longer term solution. http://www.pieta.ie/

It’s a broader issue that’s an aside from this article, I understand but a pertinent one all the same.
There are people right now who’s lives will be changed for the worst come next Tuesday morning, because of booze.
We need a starting point to help people with mental health issues. I suggest abuse of alcohol is first up on that list.

    That aside , have a craicin wkend y’all !

If what they are referring to requires medication, then I think that they should certainly get help as soon as is possible. Depression (which I get the impression is the case), while just as severe if not more, can be aided with the help of friends and family. If they have accepted the illness exists, then asking those around for help should be the next step.

I’m really sorry to hear about the predicament you find yourself in. I would strongly advise that you get your G.P. to contact St Patrick’s hospital by phone asap. Don’t call yourself, as they might dismiss you, but your G.P. should get a prompt response.
While you’re with your G.P. have them write a letter explaining your precise symptoms, this helps as when you present for assessment it’s normal not to be able to think of everything on the spot.
I sincerely wish you the best of luck.

    Simple,
Google what you think is your area of concern, find the expert in the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Buy a Ryanair ticket to the airport closest to where they work.
Get to Dublin Airport, board, land and present to the hospital where you feel you can get most support.
If you have health Insurance, don’t waste it here.

    Hi anon,

it’s great to see that you’re so dedicated to recovery and full freedom.. You’re absolutely right, it’s key to the whole process!

What I would say, in terms of my two-cents… (And hopefully not non-sense) is that there’s help available outside of a bed… A trolley.. An institution.. And excellent help at that! I have seen the results in fully free people and had the privilege to work alongside them on evenings of hope and in spreading the word of hope.. And perhaps somewhere like that centre may be of benefit (either in the interim or longer term). Basically – Don’t wait for one channel of recovery, especially if it’s taking too long! There’s many accessible, practical routes for your recovery to take and you can choose to take these!

I’m happy to share the contact info (not sure I can post it here?) and there is an online presence in daretolivesos.blogspot.com and http://www.eatingdisorderselfhelp.com
..but behind that is a group of real people who have all come through the centre. A Centre that has proven itself in giving the tools to recover and become fully free!

I hope that’s of use to you – as I said, even if it’s an interim measure. But it would be great to start getting practical, personal help – outside of the internet! :) (and ahead of those waiting lists!)

The appalling reality is that the only way you’re likely to get a bed in a public psychiatric hospital is to present to A&E saying that you are a danger to yourself and if sent home you will take your life. Even if in reality your mind is not at that place (which is a good thing), you will be forced to feign suicidality in order
to be admitted. Unless of course you have private medical insurance and then St. Pat’s will be delighted to have you in for treatment as long as BUPA or Aviva are paying 4k a week for them to do so. What an exemplary health service Ireland has!

You’ve taken a very positive step in writing this down and acknowledging it. There’s no quick cure but you are being pro active and you are seeking a way to cope now, and for the future. To the best of my knowledge there are no avenues other than your own to pursue in this, unless you have money and can afford professional help. CBT is useful and Aware run a course which you can find online. You can apply to attend a course as well which is hosted by volunteers whom I believe, have come through similar experiences themselves. It sounds like you’ve been through very tough times with this and well done on getting yourself to here, I’m sure you’ll be able to put the negative behind you and embrace a positive future. Well written piece.

I’m sorry to hear you are in crisis, Anonymous, and for whatever happened to you to precipitate this. I agree that services for people in crisis need to be urgently addressed. However, I think we need choices that are not currently available here, such as Lapland’s “Open Dialogue” and Sweden’s “Family Care Foundation”.

It pains me when folks seek psychiatric hospital beds when I know alternatives exist, but it’s just that we don’t care enough as a society to invest in them and provide them, and are conditioned to believe medication, electroshock and force-feeding are the only answers. Take care. I hope you get the support you need.

Public health mental health services are improving but remain under resourced, it is important to remain focused on what you want and to keep pursuing this. I would encourage you to seek out an accredited and experienced psychotherapist to work with. There are many excellent therapists and counsellors in private practice and many offer reduced rates. Also therapy can be accessed through your employer via employment assistance programme and health insurance can cover some treatment.
