Swimmers warned to stay out of the water at six Dublin beaches

Fingal County Council say the ‘poor quality’ results follow last weekend’s heavy rainfall.

FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL has issued an alert for six bathing areas in Co Dublin following heavy rainfall over the August bank holiday weekend.

In a statement this afternoon, the council said test results received today from samples taken on Tuesday have shown poor water quality and bathing is prohibited at these areas until further notice.

The beaches affected are:

  • Balbriggan Front Beach
  • Skerries South Beach
  • Loughshinny Beach
  • Rush South Beach
  • Portrane Beach (the Burrow)
  • Rush North Beach

The results of samples taken today will be made available on Saturday.

Warning signs will be displayed at the affected areas “as soon as possible”, according to the statement, and on-duty lifeguards will advise people to stay out of the water.

Meanwhile, samples at other beaches found the bathing water quality to be ‘good’ and ‘excellent’.

Notices placed recently on the following beaches are now being removed: Balcarrick Beach Donabate, Malahide Beach, Portmarnock Beach, Burrow Beach Sutton, Claremont Beach, Hampton Cove Balbriggan.

Earlier: Beach-goers warned not to swim at twelve Dublin beaches >

This is a most unacceptable excuse for an EU country. Heavy rain caused the pollution.
This government is fleecing us left right and centre and then come up with excuses such as blaming mother nature.
As far as EU standards are concerned this country is out of the norm.
What is Ireland? Third world country of the west?

You’re comment is racist on so many levels, that you almost get to the point of offending everyone, and therefore neutralize the offence.

Swimmers at Malahide are still coming across large floating pieces go human faeces and this must be as a results of tank flushing rather than excessive rain!

All the crud on the land (e.g. Fertiliser, slurry, general dust and particles etc.) washes off during rain into the rivers and then ends up in the sea eventually. Rivers during floods tend have a very different water chemistry than in normal flow. Simples!

Fingal County Council haven’t published the results on there website, just some vague excuse that rain water caused the pollution. No mention either of the sewage plant been emptied into the Irish Sea. They omitted to mention whether ‘The North Beach Skerries’ has been left closed or is now open?? They’re so incompetent it’s not funny. All we want are the facts, The cause of the spillage and the test results clearly published for all to see.

Typically, foul waste water and surface water enter the same sewer system so when it rains the volume of liquid in the wastewater sewer network increases dramatically. Wastewater treatment systems are designed to hold two hours of maximum rainfall, to hold any more would be cost prohibitive. So when we get in excess of two hours maximum rainfall the wastewater is discharged through storm overflow pipes directly to the sea, hence the pollution. It is not feasible to build larger holding tanks to deal with a once every two years pollution event

If it was a private individual or a company they would be prosecuted facing large fines and possibly jail. Why are the executives in fingal and DCC not held to account in the same way? Surely there is a body out there independent with the power to prosecute? This is the 2nd time this summer.
