The Fine Gael Partray branch is in Taoiseach Enda Kenny's home constituency of Mayo. Mark Stedman/Photocall Ireland

An 'administrative error' was the reason why a Fine Gael branch in Mayo didn't file its accounts

The party has responded to news that the gardaí can’t find the person responsible for the accounts of a branch in Enda Kenny’s constituency.

FINE GAEL HAS said that officers in one of its branches in Enda Kenny’s home constituency of Mayo have committed to filing accounting returns within the next seven days

It follows TheJournal.ie’s report this morning that gardaí have been unable to find the person responsible for the accounts of the Partray branch of the party in the Taoiseach’s backyard.

The Standards in Public Office (SIPO) Commission said yesterday that files relating to the Fine Gael branch in Partry in Co Mayo were passed to gardaí in 2012 after it failed to file returns.

However investigating officers haven’t been able to locate the person responsible for the accounts.

It’s emerged that this person had in fact left the country, but Fine Gael sought to play down the matter in a statement responding to today’s coverage.

screenshot.1407514330.54976 www.thejournal.ie www.thejournal.ie

The party said that the matter was “an administrative error” that involved “negligible funds” and was compounded “by the fact that the relevant officer is now working abroad”.

Fine Gael also said that branch officers are “committed” to submitting the appropriate returns within the next seven days.

Here is Fine Gael’s statement in full this evening:

In keeping with procedure, the Standards in Public Office (SIPO) Commission has passed files relating to a Fine Gael branch in Mayo to the Gardaí. This is normal practice when accounting returns are not submitted to SIPO.

As this case is with the Gardaí, Fine Gael has no desire to get involved, other than to clarify that this issue has arisen out of an administrative error, involving negligible funds and compounded by the fact that the relevant officer is now working abroad. Branch officers are committed to submitting the appropriate returns within seven days.

It should never be forgotten that while this fascist mellowed with age (medication maybe?), he was a horrible sectarian bigot for over 60 years. 60 years of preaching how to hate your fellow man while holding a bible in his hand!! What a hypocrite.

He certainly fanned the flames of sectarianism and division. He is in the twilight of his life; probably feels a bit guilty about all that hate and vitriol he spread about Catholics. He was a great barrier to peace and equality in the North for the majority of his life and that is what should be remembered rather than what he says in dotage.

Sinn Féin should make Old Naysayer an honorary member before he pops his clogs. It would appear that in the end he had a better relationship with the head of the IRA than with the head of the DUP.

It is not unusual for any career politician who lives long enough to give such interviews in an effort to justify their what they did during their career. That Paisley should now seek to mudsling at Robinson and Dodds is hardly surprising in that he hopes that it would allow future historians to view him with more compassion as a man slighted by those he once led.

The truth is however that the likes of Paisley and many others on both sides of the divide, by their rhetoric during the sixties and seventies laid the foundations for thousands to die or live lives of misery in the ensuing years. Despite his late conversion to power sharing I don’t expect that history will be kind to him and the many other politicians of his era, who in truth were little more than rabble-rousers with no real interest in resolving the problems of NI. Had Paisley and his followers who held a key to power in those years been willing to resolve the Civil Rights issue when it first arose Irish/UK history would be very different and quite likely a lot happier.

Seriously what does that say about the British that they make that sectarian bigot a peer in their elitist House of Lords. Could you imagine the outrage if the they made a Lord out of someone who has similar views towards Hindus, Muslims or Jews that Paisley did towards Catholics. There would be riots in the streets but as the venom was towards Catholics it’s seemingly alright in the UK, where anti Catholic prejudice is accepted.

Education hasn’t changed people too much . We still have more wars , murder, slander ,theft , hatred than ever before . Paisley learnt from his mistakes , sin, looked at his life , a questionable past and ultimately the good book re – revealed the Master who softened his heart . A merely secular education won’t give you that my friend . It cannot change a person from within especially since It’s always based on humanist materialism.
