Two injured during anti-internment parade in Belfast

One officer and a members of the public sustained minor injuries in the parade which saw thousands take to the streets.

THE PSNI HAS said that two people were injured in a republican anti-internment parade which took place in Belfast yesterday.

The demonstration, which started at 1pm, saw up to 4,000 people take to the streets. It marked the introduction of internment in 1971.

Speaking after the parade yesterday, PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said it had passed off with “minor trouble” with a number of fireworks and missiles thrown as the parade passed through Royal Avenue.

“One officer and one member of the public are reported to have each sustained a minor injury,” he said.

There was a considerable policing operation put in place throughout the city centre today to ensure that the Parades Commission determinations in respect of the parade and the associated protests were upheld. Our focus was, as always, on keeping people safe.

Hamilton said police will now review all evidence gathered and pursue relevant lines of inquiry relating to any offences or breaches of the Parades Commission determinations.

That’s the point of the march, to get rid of internment.

Internment is over all those in jails have been sentenced or on remand.

Steve, do a bit of research on the matter, it’s still happening albeit on smaller scale, also remand is used as a form of internment. Like holding people on remand for nearly 2 years on ridiculous charges such as ‘gathering info likely to be of use to terrorists’ for taking pictures of police at protests.

Such a sweeping statement and a blinkered view. The 6 counties have a lot more positives than negatives.

Really? What kind of positives? They would want to be fairly great to counter decades of violence and terror. Personally, I wouldn’t go to the North unless I had to.

The North Antrim coast is one of the most scenic parts of Ireland. Belfast and Derry are rocking cities.

I traveled around Antrim and Derry coast for a few days in June. Wonderful part of the country to visit and enjoy.

Green castle xo down, Devenish island,Ro valley, carrickfergus! There is a very small minority stuck in the past in NI, the rest of the society is moving on without them and there are some beautiful and worthwhile places to see up there

What negatives? The 1% of the population that is stuck in the past? The best hotel on the Island is in Belfast “The Merchant” Cushendall is one of the best villages and seaside spots in Ireland.

The people are welcoming and warm and full of character! Would you recommend Ireland to people to holiday? NI Is no different

Roger, where should I start? The wonderful scenery, the nightlife in Belfast and Derry, some wonderful restaurants, great festivals, lovely people (though there are some bad apples, but there are bad apples everywhere – you’ve only to take a walk down the Custom House in Dublin, but would that deter me from encouraging people from coming to Dublin? Hell no!!). I used to think like you with regard to the north but that was during the troubles. These are different times, they may not be perfect, but they’re much better than before. Who in the long run suffers because people in the republic have the same view as you? Hoteliers, shop owners, restaurant owners, these are the kind of people who should be getting our support.

It’s just an awful shame this tiny majority are what makes the headlines as it doesn’t reflect the city’s character at all

Too many people stuck in the past in Northern Ireland be it loyalist or republican. Out marching about internment a policy that ended almost 40 years ago. Some people put a lot of work in to building identities out of past injustices rather than constructing something better in the here and now. Any so called republicans in prison at the moment I would guess most of then have been trying to kill with no mandate to do so.
