Beef farmers launch "blitz" at Tesco in Naas

They’re protesting new age limits on their products in British supermarkets.

BEEF FARMERS HAVE descended on Tesco in Naas this evening in a “blitz” designed to send a message to British retailers.

The protest is to do with new age limits on their products that the Irish Farmers’ Association say are unfair.

Irish farmers are being hit by new restrictions by the multiples who are proposing that that the age limit of bull calf beef be reduced from 16 months to 14 months.

Farmers at this evening’s protests at the Tesco in Naas are planning to usurp the supermarket’s trolleys.

“I’m not sure whether or not they’re planning to put anything into the trolleys,” an IFA spokesperson told TheJournal.ie.

Irish farmers argue that the age restrictions would mean that grass could not be fed to the cattle, a method they say is crucial to the quality of Irish meat.

Although British farmers would also be under similar restrictions, British beef is of premium value on British shelves so Irish farmers argue that they can’t afford to take the hit to the same extent.

Tesco for its part has said that there have been no plans to change age restrictions on it’s beef and has no current plans to do so.

“Tesco is a significant supporter of Irish beef farmers; beef exports to Tesco internationally from the Republic of Ireland are c €177m per year, almost 14% of the total value of beef exports,” a statement read this evening.

Speaking at the protest, the IFA’s president Eddie Downey also warned Irish retailers that anger and frustration of farmers is at “boiling point” over reductions in retail and factory prices.

Downey says that livestock farmers’ incomes were down by 13% to 22% last year.

The IFA’s national livestock chairman Henry Burns said that the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has “stood back” in the midst of the “beef crisis”.

The IFA say that this evening’s action is planned to be the first of range of protests.

There are people alive today who admire Hitler and would be delighted to be compared with their hero.
A good hard look will not change their views on their hero.
In fact, just like when the majority of Europeans were trying desperately to ignore what Hitler and his gang were getting up to, we should learn from the inaction and the naysayers who walked Europe into a major catastrophe.

All we hear is – unemployment figurs – and in case of Ireland it has stabilised – due to 70-80,000 leaving pa .
What about all acroos EU – how many have diied etc – and rember all this is only beginning . Lagarde has said it will go on for ten more years – in other words – she hasnt a clue . Cameron – much same 2018 . they have not the remotest intention of stopping this slaughter .
So comparing her with itler – man much admired by Churchill and JFK is not way off . Hitlers disaster was the Jewish slaughetr – but in many other resecst he wwas ok . He introduced the 40 hour week and paid overtime etc . Unfortunately he aslo introduced the gas chmambers ??.

@John, it is good to read some sensitive comment her, and scary to see how many thumbs down you got! (I’m probably going the same route, but oh we’ll …)

Some people need to review their history books before they support this rubbish comparison to release their anger.

Maybe they would see that Hitler came into power in a context of economic failure at home, and that he was pretty good at blaming other European countries for the ills at home; and using people’s anger to turn it into hater towards others.

I shall also say that Germany originally didn’t want to euro and that it was forced upon them in exchange for the EU to approve reunification with east Germany. I find it quite disturbing to hear it is an evil plan engineered by them to take over Europe …

Not making any judgement over Merkel’s policies here (and like most politicians she is focusing on her own interests), but I find it a bit scary how people can twist historical facts.

You could argue that he did. Remember Hitler’s hatred of Jews didn’t spawn out of thin air. He was a soldier and watched a lot of men die for the sake of Germany, only to see politicians cop out and surrender. He saw the devastating effects the war and surrender had on the average person.

People blamed all the problems facing Germany on the Jewish community so you could argue that his sheer hatred for them was a sort of twisted revenge for the suffering they “caused”. There was a lot of literature published at the time regarding the evidence of Jewish involvement, which of course was circumstantial at best.

That sounds like compassion to me. A very misguided and twisted compassion but the intention seems to be there.

Banks were trading between each other and using the loans repayable to create even more money on the books. This in turn allowed them to lend even more ridiculous sums out (125% mortgages as an example) and rake in even more profits. The problem was that this money didn’t actually exist. They used fictional IOU’s to increase the amount of money they could legally lend out. Seeing as this money didn’t exist yet, you had banks lending out more than they could safely do which caused the collapse.

How exactly is that the fault of someone who isn’t born yet who will still be paying for this? Or how is that the homeowners fault who took out a mortgage abiding by the rules the banks themselves laid out?

It’s a fractional reserve banking system. the actual money never exists in the kind of volume it’s leant out. Nothing new there. The structural problems with the system are in the international markets, not the banks.
The repackaging of bundled debts and selling on is fine, but when the seller is motivated to bet on those debts failing, and in a position to increase the risk of that happening (fluctuating interest rates) it becomes self fulfilling. As this system grew and became over leveraged, market confidence took a dive, and we had the large corporate failures.
The last 6 years of austerity is the product of balance sheet maintenance in the Int market companies still out there, JP Morgan, HSBC, Citi, BOA etc. yes technically banks, but not in the personal lending sense, their business is multi faceted. The only way this will change is if the markets are motivated by systematic net wealth increases, most things thy would lead to this have serious down sides such as oil industry like cartels. Continuing boom/bust cycle is the most likely outcome in my opinion, best personal solution, think before u get into debt.

leaving aside the obvious blunder made by the Spanish newspaper vie a ve the Hitler “comment”, some of their comment may have merit. Germany is starting to become the school yard bully of Europe is seems to want to reshape Europe in its own image. we buy a lot of German products and their domestic economy is reliant on our buying power. should we decide to leave the euro suddenly German goods would be too expensive and we would be buying Chinese made goods instead. therefore they have an economic interest in keeping the euro going. although i might like to visit or even work in Germany at some stage i don’t want my country turned into the German model. the one size fits all mentality that the Germans seem to think works across Europe has clearly is not working. not to stereotype or anything but each country has its different ways of operating based in part on the national mood. the German mentality of hard work and frugal living lends itself very well to austere living. whilst i personally speaking i actually prefer that way of doing things it is crippling the heart and soul of other countries. the facts of the matter are this that no matter how much Germany want a Spanish person to act like a German person they cannot. by the same token trying to adapt multiple countries to the economic and fiscal polices of one country though the mechanisms of the central bank and the euro currency is impossible

Well there is some truth in what the article stated , we are in the midst of WWIII on this time its about money and natural resources and not murder but enslavement .
    Lets be realistic here ,
Common denominator here , bad banking practices(ignored but europe ignored by politicans) ………..now its the ordinary people carrying the can , the extremely rich temain untouched……… And theres now a small group of face humans are absolutely creaming it

As a German I must say that the niveau of many countries when it comes to commenting on Germany is as low as poo and jew jokes! Germany is the driving force in a positive way in Europe!

Herr Stevie this is no jew joke and Germany drives Europe for its own benefit and if you cant see that then you are a true disciple.

@Gerry the way you responded proves my point! Grow up! Of course Germany is looking after it’s benefit the most (like everyone else in the world)! Do you know when Germany benefits the most? When Europe is running good! And that is what Germany is trying to do! But nay sayers like yourself are stopping the progress!

” Do you know when Germany benefits the most? When Europe is running good! ”

Actually, Germany is benefitting the most from the weaker euro as a result of Europe running bad due to a surge in exports.

Steve, the point is that if Germany are committed to the EU then it shouldn’t be looking after its own benefits the most. That goes completely against the whole point of the EU. The last time Germany did that we had a world war. And again the time before that. In this context the references to Nazi Germany are considerably justified.

If Germany wants to just only look after its own interests then it should leave the EU and leave the rest of us to pursue the original aims of the EU which is cooperation and integration to the benefit of EVERYBODY.
