10,000 people have signed up to study Trinity's first (free) online course

Luckily they won’t all have to cram into one classroom.

GOOD THING THEY’RE not going to need a lecture hall for this.

Trinity College Dublin’s first free online course has already attracted more than 10,000 students, with still one week to go before it begins.

The university said today that more than half of the applicants are from outside Ireland, with particularly strong demand in countries with high numbers of Irish emigrants such as the UK and the US.

The course is titled ‘Irish Lives in War and Revolution: Exploring Ireland’s History 1912-1923′. It is what’s known as a MOOC – a Massive Open Online Course – and is the first of its kind at TCD.

Anyone with internet access can do the six-week course, which will have content delivered by Trinity’s history lecturers.

Students will learn about the lives of the people living through one of the most turbulent times in Irish history, and the contradictory viewpoints about what life was like back then.

“Our aim with the course is to question that there is a single narrative or an easy explanation of the past,” said Professor Ciarán Brady from Trinity’s School of Histories and Humanities.

We want to challenge the silent assumption that there can be one authoritative voice claiming to have all the answers.

The course even has its own hashtag for social media discussions:  #FLirishlives.

Students don’t get a qualification at the end, but can pay for a statement of participation.

A great project. For the nostalgic college experience, I’m going to miss a few lectures, then hound others for their notes.

These things are brilliant. You don’t have to want to work in something to want to study it, and really that’s not what education should ultimately be about anyway. Resources from universities like this is like we’re at the polar opposite to the hedge schools now, education is all around us.

Dont let them haters get you down Christine. Keep working hard and late to provide for the one you love dont give them haters an inch of joy from any suffering you do to provide. You remind me of my moma in a way. Working late and hard just to fix a hot plate for the kids. Women like you must be respected especially when you mamma sometimes have to walk the streets. Its hard but thats the game of life, it give Ups downs sometimes some spin arounds. But we cant chose we just fight what life is given us and come on top. work them hours baby that let the haters get you Christine.

Imma right a song about ladies like this they get a special place in your Bois Tate heart. if you ever around the Tallaght area (I just set up there) Holla at your boi Tate and Ill treat you right. got a big heart for the strong independent women and I know how to treat her right through my momas teachings. love ya the world loves ya, Keep doing what you doing Baby

Are Trinity not way late getting out of the blocks on this one? Some Universities have been doing this for quite some time at this point. Harvard have a great one on Classical history – particularly Roman history, for a good few years now.

Still, it’s to be very much welcomed and is a worthy initiative and interesting topic too.

They is similar to coursera courses. They aren’t degrees, most of them are just a module or half of a module. What’s wrong with learning a little bit about a subject you are interested in, it’s like you will be competing with degree holders when you finish!

Dave. I have two of these degrees – one from Harvard, then Oxford. The analysis/evaluation of everything is the same as attending lectures.

Its just done better – with quarterly seminars to meet your mentors.

And a much better availability of information…..

@Joan, just for interest? What a despicable thing to do. Give the money to charity next time and use the internet/library to research your “interests”. Splashing out on an expensive course just for fun is reprehensible.

So you don’t get a qualification at the end of the course but you do have to pay to say you participated, this isn’t free, people are hardly going to just do the course and not expect some form of proof that they did it.
