Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits California

The epicentre was based near Napa.

A STRONG 6.0 magnitude earthquake jolted California early this morning, the US Geological Survey said, though there were no immediate reports of deaths or serious damage.

The quake struck at 3:20 am (1120 GMT) north west of American Canyon, California, USGS said, at a depth of just 6.7 miles (10.8 kilometres) below the surface.

The power was out in Napa, about six miles from the earthquake’s epicentre, as well as in other towns and cities nearby, affecting more than 10,000 households, according to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

The California Highway Patrol in the San Francisco Bay Area tweeted that it was “checking over crossings and bridges for obvious signs of structural integrity,” and asked residents to report any signs of problems.

Residents of the cities of San Francisco, some 40 miles south west, and Davis, just over 40 miles north-eastearthquake, quickly took to Twitter reporting also feeling the quake.

Twitter user Tyson Winter wrote: “Shook violently here in Napa. Power’s out.”

Ann Marie Christy, wrote that her mother, also in Napa, said the shaking “was very violent with a lot of broken glass.”

And in San Francisco, Om Malik posted “Damn, woke me up. Was super long. # quake # sf.”

Further north, Tim Kerbavaz tweeted: “Felt it in Davis too. Quite long.”

Nearly an hour later and I still can’t get back asleep. I normally enjoy when my bed gets a good rattle but this time not quite.

It was the arrival of the new baby elephant at Dublin Zoo.
I went to a lousy zoo once. All it had was a dog. It was a Shiz-zu.

There was a 6.6 in Chile last night. Interupted my dinner and knocked over my wine. Happened about half 6 local time when my girlfriend and I were sitting in a restaurant with wine bottles up on shelves hanging from the ceiling, that was the single scariest thing the thought of all the bottles coming down, but they were glued to the shelves! Interesting experience. Half the restaurant ran for the door, the Japanese wedding party upstairs just kept on going! The epicentre was about 10km N from where we are in Viña del Mar on the coast outside Santiago. Some adrenaline rush I can tell ya!

Just found out there was another one about 4hrs later 44km out to see at 4 on the scale. Didn’t feel that one though. Only felt one tiny aftershock as we were finishing our meal.
