'I never thought that after 20 years addicted to drugs and alcohol I’d be graduating and drug free'

Coolmine’s therapeutic community helps 1,000 people overcoming addiction every year and 60% of those who complete the therapy remain drug free.
The people gave me the ability to manage my behaviour. I never thought that after 20 years addicted to drugs and alcohol I’d be graduating and drug free. I thank the people in Coolmine for that.

unnamed (19) Andrew Kirwan (Louth); International singing star, Damien Dempsey and Emma O’Shea (Dublin). International singing star, Damien Dempsey, an ambassador for Coolmine Therapeutic Community congratulates Andrew Kirwan from Louth and Emma O’Shea from Dublin who received their certificates at a special event in St Patricks Cathedral, having completed the comprehensive therapy and treatment.

ANDREW KIRWAN FROM Drogheda Co Louth completed the comprehensive therapy and treatment at Coolmine Therapeutic Community along with 19 other people.

He said that the Coolmine therapy “focussed on getting me to believe in myself and with that belief anything was possible”.

He was presented with a certificate for completing addiction therapy by singer Damien Dempsey.

The singer said it was a great honour to meet with the graduates who had worked so hard to overcome their addiction and return to their families and communities.

“Anyone who has ever tried to quit smoking knows how difficult it can be to stop, so this is a huge achievement for these clients to overcome their addiction.”

Emma O’Shea said that Coolmine made it possible for her to manage her addiction:

My mam and dad have their daughter back and I am free again. Free to be back with my family. Free to be with my son who will be starting school next week and to be a loving mammy to him.

Treatment

Coolmine’s therapeutic community model is a treatment and rehabilitation approach where clients live in small, structured, drug-free communities.

The goal is to encourage psychological and lifestyle changes to enable people to maintain a drug-free existence.

It helps 1,000 people overcoming addiction every year and 60% of those who complete the therapy remain drug free.

Chief Executive of Coolmine Therapeutic Community, Pauline McKeown, said that Coolmine’s focus was on helping the most vulnerable graduates to rebuild their lives and return to society.

“The big problem for a recovering addict is finding a home and employment.

If a client leaves Coolmine and returns to an environment of drugs and alcohol, his or her chances of success are greatly reduced.

The treatment approach is based on peer support, and participants are expected to contribute to the general running of the community, and to their own recovery, by actively participating in educational activities and in group and individual therapy.

I don’t blame some staff members for not striking, they are after all trying to make a living and are perhaps scared to rock the boat. However I will not be shopping there and I’d encourage others to shop around also. If they won’t listen to employees maybe they’ll take note of losses in profits and market share.

alwaysrightokay, we live in a free society, not a communist dictatorship, with a whole range of rights. Part of that freedom is the right for someone to offer a job to someone else on mutually agreed terms. If an individual doesn’t want to work under the terms offered then don’t take the job.

If Dunnes couldn’t get workers, they would have to change to suit. The opposite is trade unions trying to get more money and better terms than they are offered by threatening to close down the business.

Most people in Ireland are not in trade unions and they seem to be doing fine. Trade Unions are a hangover from decades ago when an evil philosophy or quasi religion founded by Marx & Lenin nearly destroyed individual freedom worldwide.

I think it’s fantastic that individual workers in Dunnes are standing up to the unions. It’s the unions that should be closed down, not Dunnes. Let the unions start their own supermarket chain and they can pay their employees whatever they want. Funny I wouldn’t expect it to work. Would you?

A free society with the right to strike, but your comments are typical of the ” I am doing ok fcuk the rest of yous” Dunnes is not a loss making company and isn’t in any imminent danger of closure, it’s just trying to maximise its profits by treating its staff like sh!t. And thankfully I live in a free society which entitles me not to shop in a company that treats its staff like dirt. But you go ahead a shop there and look after yourself.

Stephen, why should there be a right to strike? What you mean if that an outside politically motivated TU can destroy a business and they can’t be sue?. Is that what you mean by the right to strike? Anyone can walk off the job, break their contract and work elsewhere. But blocking the entrance, intimidating and picketing shouldn’t be allowed. If anyone treated me like dirt I’d leave. If everyone did that they wouldn’t treat people like dirt, that’s if they do.

This is about decency and respect in the work place.

We are a society and we should behave like a society with respect for all.
I believe Dunnes management miscalculated this one. People are tired of being kicked. Let’s see how powerful Dunnes are. Let’s see how powerful if people boycott their stores and they lose even 5% of market share.

Dunnes Management a sign of the times, some employers think they can terrorize workers and get away with it. The establishment unions have stood by and done little or nothing to protect their members. It is time for those Unions to break away from the “Labour Party” and pull out of the so called partnerships with the Government and stand up for the workers.

We’re well beyond the Victorian age now, employers have a responsibility to those they employ and customers, potential customers and former customers have a choice to make in who they’ll support. Most right-minded people support Dunnes Staff.

I suspect most people in Dunnes are more than happy to have a job with them. How many of the strikers are coerced into going on strike, like I was coerced into joining a union at 18 years of age, or risk being called scabs and abuse hurled at them from the picket lines? Join a trade union and you give up part of your freedoms.

As always, there’s two sides to every story. Many years ago I worked for a large retail chain like Dunnes and some of the union behaviour there beggared belief. Management could not pick stock off the floor for instance or retrieve stock from the storerooms if a customer asked for a size say that wasn’t on display as the union rules were that handling stock was for the staff on the floor. The shop steward acted like Stalin telling management what they could or couldn’t do. One guy in the storeroom had a serious drink issue and would come to work locked or not turn up at all. The company couldn’t dismiss him as the union said it was an illness he had…..

Working at the airport was a bigger joke. Back in the day the unionised staff there were known as “Burke’s Mafia”. Ray Burke protected them, stopped competition from getting a foothold in the airport and in return they’d deliver the votes come election time.

Mandate are just using the Dunnes workers here to try and rush through legislation on union recognition. This is what they want, every Irish worker signed up to them.

Hate to see any worker being shat on but Dunne s Stores have the worst business ethic record going, be it employees or suppliers. So long as Lowry and the other back hander T.D.s are happy Dunnes are happy.

Its nice to see dunnes workers uniting against water charges. More companies should follow in there footsteps.

I live beside Dunnes in Ennis and I won’t be going near it. I know a few workers there and management ain’t coming out of this too well. A lot of bullying and threatening going on.

I’d be against 80% of strikes as i feel they cost more jobs than they are worth and only represent the needs of a select few especially when they take place before talks are exhausted.
Dunnes however are a profit making organisation with a relatively solid and relatively straight forward shift set up that could easily provide 80% of their work force with full time contracts. Their way of working is a race to the bottom for all if the work force dont stand up for themselves now!

    The Scab

A Poem by: Jack London (1876-1916)

After God had finished the rattlesnake, the toad, and the vampire, he had some awful substance left with which he made a scab.

A scab is a two-legged animal with a corkscrew soul, a water brain, a combination backbone of jelly and glue. Where others have hearts, he carries a tumor of rotten principles.

When a scab comes down the street, men turn their backs and angels weep in heaven, and the devil shuts the gates of hell to keep him out.

No man (or woman) has a right to scab so long as there is a pool of water to drown his carcass in, or a rope long enough to hang his body with. Judas was a gentleman compared with a scab. For betraying his master, he had character enough to hang himself. A scab has not.

Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage. Judas sold his Savior for thirty pieces of silver. Benedict Arnold sold his country for a promise of a commission in the British army. The scab sells his birthright, country, his wife, his children and his fellowmen for an unfulfilled promise from his employer.

Esau was a traitor to himself; Judas was a traitor to his God; Benedict Arnold was a traitor to his country; a scab is a traitor to his God, his country, his family and his class.

Is a scab not a brave strong minded thinking individual, as opposed to a union which is a Communist collective? I’d rather be a scab in a free democracy than a union member in a worker’s party Communist tyranny.

I was forced to join a union was I was 18 or told I couldn’t work. I only realised later that was illegal as our constitution guarantees a freedom of association. If monopoly legislation applied to unions, they’d be illegal.

On the one hand you say, workers have a choice when they take up a job conditions etc if they don’t like it just go away and find another job, then on the other hand your saying you where forced to join a union when you where 18, well kid you know where the door is get a job in Ryan Air or some other company that doesn’t recognise unions, they’ll be glad to have a single minded individual like yourself.

Posting back the loyalty card to Dunnes is a good idea… I’ll be doing that.
And as previously said, as long as the Heffernans treat their staff like rubbish I won’t be setting foot in the place.
