Mountjoy Prison

New governor appointed to Mountjoy Prison

Brian Murphy will take up his new role in September.

A NEW GOVERNOR of Mountjoy Prison has been appointed by the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald today.

Brian Murphy will take up his new role in September, succeeding Edward Whelan who is retiring.

Brian Murphy has served in a wide range of roles in the civil service and is currently the Director of Operations in the Irish Prison Service.

Prior to joining the Prison Service Brian served as Principal Officer in the Department of Finance, while in his early career he worked in the Department of Social Protection and in the Department of Agriculture.

He is a qualified Business Analysis Consultant and holds a Masters in Management from Trinity College Dublin.

New job

Minister Fitzgerald congratulated Brian Murphy on his appointment as Campus Governor of the Mountjoy Prison wished him well in his new post.

“He has a distinguished record of public service and the experience gained throughout his career, including as Director of Operations in the Irish Prison Service, will ensure that he has all the qualities needed for such a unique and challenging role,” she said.

The minister also paid tribute to the outgoing governor, who is retiring after 42 years in the Prison Service.

He has served with distinction at the highest level of management within the Irish Prison Service and has a proven track record of delivery in all the prisons for which he was responsible.

Recently, as Campus Governor of Mountjoy Prison, he has overseen the transformation of a prison that was once earmarked for closure but has now been revitalised and modernised ensuring a standard of accommodation for prisoners that complies with domestic and international best practice.

She added that Whelan leaves behind a “proud record of dedicated service to the State” and she thanked him for his service.

Murphy’s appointment as campus governor follows an open recruitment competition which was conducted by the Public Appointments Service.

If they spent money and time on the primary schools and early education in disadvantaged areas, within eighteen years they could close the prison altogether.
Primary schools are the real feeder schools to third level.

A library isn’t much good at this late stage in their lives. They should forget about the library and invest in a few books for Junior Infants and check that they have some neighbour or granny that will read with them if the parents can’t.

Anything to keep them going at that stage of their lives in fairness, I heard a story about one prisoner who kept a pet crow in prison. Prison was all he ever knew and believe it or not when he got out the state provided him with a job in a supermarket, a place to live but he couldn’t handle it on the outside world and he killed himself

Maybe he might take away all the televisions, gym, pool table, privileges and make it into a proper prison. Introduce a chain gang and make them work.

Appointing someone to run a prison that has never worked in a prison before in their life. Very logical.

Great, another public-servant-for-life to maintain the status-quo and effect no change or reform. Surely thr private labour markets could have provided someone more useful to the needs of the prison service and the populace as a whole?

And what the f*ck is a “Business Analysis Consultant” when he’s at home? And why will he now be Mountjoys new governor?

I know what a business analyst is. I know what a business consultant is. Unless he consults the business analysts, I’m afraid I’m still unsure of exactly what a business analyst consultant is.

I take the point about pre-judging though, I jumped the gun on that and should of course give him the benefit of the doubt. I’m always very weary though, of anything other than a direct line promotion in the civil service.

That point wasn’t made clear in the initially published version of the article. In light of his service as D.O., I recant my previous statements and can only hope he does a good job.

He never worked in a prison .. That’s the public sector for you . He’s actually a lag lover which means he is lax about security , within time mountjoy will be full with drugs again . Gov whelan did a brilliant job cleaning it up after john lonergans mess .
