That teacher will be able to avail of the NEPS to get all the help that they need .. This woman who “maybe” in her first episode of losing her scruples will also be able to avail of a kind counsellor that will help her in her recovery /future .. There is no winners in this .. Cue the red thumbs from the reactionary brigade !

Absolutely, what did you want done, tie her in stocks in the square, and throw rotten fruit at her. Released , I’m sure into the care of her family having been assessed and possibly relieving some medication, and follow up. Doesn’t that make sense.

This Country always seems to wait until something bad happens before deciding to do things properly. I would hope they would make sure that she is not a further danger to the public and a 48 hour psychiatric hold would be best , and after that time if concluded she isin’t a danger, then release her to her family.

It doesn’t say anything in the report about a mental health issue. But even if it did, that’s no excuse. If you have a health problem of any kind it’s your responsibility to make sure it’s being managed so that it doesn’t come to this.

@mitch If our jails were any good at dealing with mental health issues then the percentage of repeat offenders would be a lot less. The problem is that our jails are very much a “sweep under the carpet” type of thing. People come out with the same mindset they went in with. Only now they resent society even more for taking away their freedom. I’m not saying that’s a logical response, but it is true for many.

Well that’s totally not true , I happen to know about jails .. When a repeat offender comes into jail , he’s a different man as in he feels at home , he survives , he goes to the gym , eats well , goes to school and achieves results . I seen heroine addicts weighing 7 stone or less coming in , within 2 year of jail .. He’s up to a healthy 12 stone , fit from using the gym , off heroine thanks to the methadone scheme , after doing he’s leaving cert or some course ., he’s a new man . The problem is when they are released , they’re back into the monetary system where they are put into a class and treated that way , they can’t find work , become frustrated , slowly get back on heroine .. Then they are back in jail again . Irish jails are among the best in Europe , yes they need to improve .. And they are improving .. Problem is society .. Gap between rich & poor is getting bigger . In prison there is no class , no rich or poor , you survive in your own way .

The re-offending rate is around 50%. That is not good enough my friend. Compare it to Norway, 20%. To be honest most of your post just seems like ill-informed opinion. I know heroin addicts who use heroin in prison. Some would go as far to say its easier to get in there. Methadone programs are one of the most inefficient rehabilitation programs in terms of numbers. The problem is they are thrown into prison and nothing is really done to rehabilitate them.

It seems like you are perfectly happy to condition people into believing prison is the only place for them.

With the exception of mountjoy , little or no drugs is getting in . Norway is indeed 20% , reason being is because norways prisons are tougher , their policy is to hand down small sentences but make jail as tough as possible so inmates don’t reoffend , and it actually works . In Norway they still slop out , while Ireland is investing to eliminate that . You’re half right in saying inmates are using drugs inside , but that’s only mountjoy , which is not fit for purpose and needs to be shut down .

Norway literally has the most relaxed prison in the world. That’s why they don’t re-offend. Because they are treated like human beings and given the care they need to recover.

We do need some more prisons IMO. Too many crimes committed and punishment too short.

A man would have been released too, happens all the time. They could not discriminate or a person could sue them. Presumably the woman was released into a hospital. Also the authorities must take into account the danger a person poses to society. A man is physically stronger so in some cases poses more of a danger to society. You are talking about 100 years ago, this undermines your argument !! Things were different then, the Rising was 1916, women didn’t get the right to vote until two years later. I’m not excusing it but most likely she was rich well connected politically and financially, the others were not.
