Open Thread: Nominations for a WOMAN to receive the Freedom of Dublin, please!

There have been no female recipients of the award since 2000, when Aung San Suu Kyi was honoured.

LABOUR COUNCILLORS WEREN’T too happy when the list of names to receive the Freedom of Dublin was made public yesterday.

To be clear — they didn’t have any problem with either soccer legend John Giles or Brother Kevin Crowley, of the Capuchin Day Centre, being put forward by Lord Mayor Christy Burke.

Rather, the lack of women was an issue.

“I was very disappointed last year when no women were considered and I raised the issue privately,” Councillor Rebecca Moynihan told this website yesterday.

This year when I heard that there were no women nominated again, I contacted the Lord Mayor, Christy Burke, to discuss this and suggest women’s names.
Aung San Suu Kyi (who was under house arrest at the time) was the last person to be honoured with the freedom of the city, in 2000 — sharing the award with the four members of U2 and Paul McGuinness.

What woman would you nominate for the honour?

Remember, the recipient doesn’t necessarily have to be from the city — Brother Crowley is from Cork, for instance (for that matter, obviously Aung San Suu Kyi is from Burma).

Anyway… Over to you.

This is getting ridiculous now – people falling over themselves to be outraged about something. All this does is make the next deserving woman who is nominated feel that she is the token female.

There’s no outrage Dave, it’s not a question of looking for balance for the sake of it. It seems unlikely to me that for fourteen years in a row there have been no women worthy of nomination.

In over 130 years only 1 Irishwoman has ever been awarded freedom of the city and that doesn’t strike you as odd? More news sources than the journal have pointed this out, meaning it is a legitimate issue of concern for many people. It doesn’t imply anyone thinks The Lord Mayer is intentionally sexist, just that it’s good for everyone to widen our horizons and consider those who may otherwise have been overlooked.

Nobody wants that. That would be very shallow to want a token award. It’s the ‘maybe’ contained in your first comment. Maybe the men were the best ‘candidates’. Maybe, however inadvertently, women are being overlooked. Maybe it’s fair to point out that a woman has not received this honour in 14 years so it can be investigated and see whether sexism is at work or not.

It’s not a question of picking a woman for the sake of it. It’s about asking ourselves if, in picking who we think deserves it the most, we have unintentionally excluded certain sectors of society. It doesn’t mean there has to be a woman recipient for every man recipient, it just means we’d like those who make the decisions to look around and see the contributions women are making and recognise them.

Do you honestly feel that only one woman in the last 130 years deserved this honour? If so, we simply agree to disagree.

If you think it’s possible that there were other women who should have been considered, then it is important to look at the other factors at play that might have an impact e.g. who’s making these decisions, what criteria are they using…

“She’s a woman, bung her in there for the sake of balance” is not what any real feminist is looking for.

I think the point here (which many of you seem to be missing) is that Irish women are not being considered for these awards for some reason. To have 1 Irish woman receive this award in 130 years is disrespectful to women and makes a mockery of the award itself. Talk of tokenism and gender quotas is lazy and misses the point entirely.

This manufactured (non) issue from Labour councillors, regarding the freedom of Dublin City nominations, is politically correct rubbish and a waste of the taxpayer euros which hard-pressed Dublin City taxpayers pay them.

The Freedom of Dublin should be awarded to the most meritorious person, not to a token woman or man.

Wouldn’t Labour Party voters in Dublin City expect their councillors to be dealing with more substantial and pressing issues, instead of making gender politics a priority?
