A viable device was found in Cavan today, it has now been made safe

A number of houses had to be evacuated.

THE ARMY BOMB Disposal Team rendered safe a viable device in Cavan this afternoon.

It was found in a residential area of Cootehill by a member of the public.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety and a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The team arrived on scene at 11:55 am and they found the device to be viable.

It was made safe by a controlled explosion.

The Defence Forces have said that, “Items of an evidential nature will be handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation.”

The scene was declared safe at 2.40 this afternoon.

A viable device? What is that? Is it a working iPhone, or a buzzing raging rabbit? Why not call it “a bomb”.

It could be anything from a grenade to an IED to a half finished Anarchist’s cookbook project. The point is it could detonate and do damage to people and/or property.
