Looks like deciding to queue for four days for a Dublin semi-d paid off...

People have been queuing at the new development since Tuesday, no doubt causing some passers-by to wonder if they’d traveled back in time to the days of the Celtic Tiger.

THE HOUSE-HUNTERS who decided to start queuing on Tuesday afternoon for a home at a new development in Swords, north Dublin, were celebrating this afternoon, after ‘Millers Glen’ opened for business as planned.

Megan O’Shaughnessy, pictured here with partner Robert Delaney, was first in the queue on Tuesday.

The line continued to grow during the week, in part due to media attention — leading some to observe that the scenes were worryingly reminiscent of those witnessed at the height of the Celtic Tiger housing bubble.

The queue earlier this week. [Mark Stedman/Photocall Ireland]

Sixty newly-built two, three and four-bed homes priced between €240,000 and €400,000 were on sale at the Swords complex.

The estate was built by Gannon Homes, which is owned by prominent property developer Gerry Gannon, who was part of the so-called ‘Maple 10′ group of investors allegedly given hundreds of millions by Anglo Irish Bank to re-invest in the bank as its share price plummeted.

The houses were being sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and O’Shaughnessy and Delany secured what they wanted in a three-bedroom semi-d this afternoon.

Delighted they got the house they wanted… Too many begrudgers in this country! If they wanted to queue out to be sure they got a house which I’m sure they worked & saved very hard to do so then fair play to them.

Totally agree with you there Laura. They worked and saved hard and got What they deserve. Not like the leeches of society who think the state should support them with every benefit available plus to hand them the keys of a house!!!

I’m sure mommy and daddy forked out the brunt of it. Let’s hope things stay steady in the retail trade.

Looks like there was only a small number of viewers and they only sold a few out of 60. Far from selling out, no need to lose your sleep.
The whole queuing thing was a massive overreaction or a stunt.

    Eileen Charters:

That’s never going to change. There will always be a social welfare system in this country regardless what you shriek and cry foul about. Like it or not, it’s here to stay! It looks like the Gov’t will soon need to raise stamp duty to deter the celtic-tiger type of addiction to property buying!

As someone who has relied on social welfare I find your comments offensive, I am not a scrounger, I worked where I could but my contract was steadily reduced until I had no choice but to sign on or starve. I am now in full time employment thankfully, but the idea that all those on social welfare are scroungers and wastes of space is outdated and disgraceful. Maybe helping those people access education and supports will allow them access to jobs where they can contribute instead of stigmatising them.

Agree 100% Ben. There are too many ‘snobs’ that denounce people in social housing.

Eileen Charters’ theory can be debunked as follows:

    - social housing is not simply a matter of handing over the “keys of a house” – the tenant rents the house from the relevant council or at least until he/she can afford to buy it.

    - people who are financially vulnerable should not be denounced as “leeches”.

Now, after we’ve all stopped laughing, can we please agree that there has to be a better way than this if we are to to all assert our equal rights as human beings OR ARE WE ALL TRULY FECKED BY A FAILED MERRY-GO-ROUND OF A RUBBISH SYSTEM?

Great little country isn’t it. This couple pay a quarter million for a gaff and they’ll probably have a bunch of asylum scammers and their brood of megaphone headed little sh*ts living next door. Or they might get lucky and it’ll only be some home grown entitlement junkie with 5 kids from 4 different fathers.

Well if it is true thast the council bought 9 of the houses you can wipe 20,000 off the price of the remaining stock. After all the hype very few buyers showed up. Could it just be that many young people simply are not in a position to buy a home.

Should be a ban on the media reporting this. It’s just making people worried about getting on the ladder and inflating prices again and taking out big mortages.

The real fools here are the people who think they are getting value for money. This is about hype by developers and learning from the past. If people can’t learn they deserve the noose they put on their necks.

Not begrudging fair play to them, but did all 60 houses sell out today? Would love to know as I’m fed up of the media hype, what is actually going on isn’t necessarily happening on the ground and the media are just fueling another bubble

If they did we would have heard about it already as sherry fitz would have the press pushing the story.

The Irish Times were a bit more restrained in declaring it Mission Accomplished, the queue did not seem to live up to the hype. But I think the one sided reporting and the fact that this caused such a storm should mean that we should see a similar tactic of first come first served from other agents in the near future.
