The ceasefire is welcome news. But the real battle starts in the negotiations. Ukraine is not going to accept ceding territory to rebels. Either the rebels hand back all of the territory or the war will go on. A sovereign state has the right to defend it’s territorial integrity and does not have to give in to Russian sponsored rebels.

It depends on what you mean by forces on the ground. Are the Ukranians negotiating with rebels or the Russian army? Because if it’s the rebels, then yes. I would imagine that the Ukranians wouldn’t be willing to cede their gains to them. But if we’re talking about the Russian army, well I can’t imagine the EU or NATO will allow an invasion to result in a land grab. This is going to play out one of two ways, either the Ukranians will regain their territory, join NATO and the EU or the Russians will push harder and harder until they got caught out. At which point they will get their arse kicked by the new NATO strike force. The Russians can’t win a war with the West and they’re losing the battle over hearts and minds. The ruble is imploding and the Russian people are suffering. In a democracy, this would matter. But Putin will have to back down, or he’ll be publicly embarassed by the rest of the world and shown to be the weak and despicable piece of s**t that he is.

I don’t think hating Putin is a recent phenomenon. I imagine most of the free world has hated him for years including myself. Mostly it stems from him being a hateful human being. His handling of ethnic divisions in the Caucasus and blaming all of Russia’s woes on the LGBT community are pretty despicable. He’s a corrupt oligarch and will smear anyone who disagrees. He’s anti free-speech and really doesn’t care about his own people. The Ukranian debacle is just the latest exhibition of his ridiculous desire to make Russia a world power once again. All that’s happened is a collapsed ruble and economic desperation. If you’re going to be an evil dictator, at least be a good one.

I wouldn’t want the US to get involved. That’s ended in disaster one too many times. That NATO strike force isn’t really there to fight Russians. Up until the Russians straight up invaded last week, the Ukrainian government was winning. All the NATO force has to do is land and make sure that there are no Russians on the ground. That gives Putin one of two choices, pull his soldiers back or admit that his soldiers are in Ukraine. NATO will be able to prove that the Russians are there and Putin will have no choice but to withdraw or the UN will bring the hammer down on them. Putin can’t survive against NATO and the US would be obliged to assist if NATO was threatened. This will never happen, and so the Russians will conveniently finish their “holidays” and go back where they came from. At which point the Ukrainian government will continue where it left off two weeks ago and batter the rebels into submission.
The EU has an enormous trade deficit with Russia, it has ALL of the leverage. You only have to look at the exchange markets to see how badly the ruble is doing. It will be impossible for Russia to borrow on the bond market and so it will economically collapse. This isn’t your Dad’s Russia where they could just print more money, we saw how that went in the late 90′s.

I am interested in the LGBT community, as are many others. Is that meant to be some veiled insult? This isn’t 1934, it’s not an insult to call someone gay. Well, at least it’s not in the free world but I understand that people don’t believe in human rights in Russia.

But they can’t afford the astonishing rate at which the ruble is being devalued because of EU direct action. That has very real implications. They’ve just free-floated it and the Russian central bank is talking about selling it’s foreign reserves to prop up the ruble. These are not the actions of a care free government like you would have us believe they are. As far as what NATO is going to do? Who knows? You could be right, it could be more bullshit. But facts are facts, Russia may very well get a military win out of this. But at the cost of their economy.
I despise the fact that the EU relies on Russian gas. But that gas will run out. At which point Russia will completely collapse. People are already leaving in the millions, it’s a dying state with little influence outside of it’s immediate borders. Even if Russia pulls off a miracle and the Eastern Ukraine is given statehood, do you really think the Ukrainian government won’t join NATO which is really what this has been about all along? Russia still loses in the long run.

Russia hardly trades the ruble internationally all energy is traded in US dollars and they announced a move to Chinese yuan in the new gas deal. Russia’s other main industry, arms, is also not ruble denominated so it matters not. For any exports it’s a win obviously. Yes some imports will rise, they can sell US debt to prop it up to whatever level they’re happy with. They want to move away from US dollar anyway. This isn’t the 1980s Soviet Union, Russia is not a basket case however much you’d live to think it is.

@Sean J. Troy. To bring the Russian military down you do not need NATO. All Ukraine needs now is antitank and antiaircraft weapons, military electronics and equipment, UAV’s and direct intelligence from satellites and AVAC’s. There are already growing concerns in Russia after the first bodies of killed Russian Soldiers start arriving to Russia. Parents are panicking and trying to find they sons with whom they cannot make a contact for a month or more. You could see comments made by captured Russian paratroopers and despite the immense pressure back at home their did not say that they were tortured in Ukraine to say that. They saw Ukrainian Army soldiers who treated them well and not “cruel fascist who kill kids” as UA pictured in Russian internal propaganda. Majority of Russians speak only Russian so they cannot receive any information from abroad.

Pjm I’m not hearing that the ceasefire is broke. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it will be. There are too many factions, especially on the Kiev side. Poroshenkos position has weakened hugely. You have to remember this was painted as a mop up job. Then they claimed Russia invaded. Ukrainian people are not stupid they know he negotiates with the rebels. An unknown section of the Kiev battle formation does not answer to Kiev being bank rolled by oligarchs like Kolomoiski. There are figures with popular support like Tymoshenko and Yatsenyuk who are dead set against negotiations. Obviously all the Nazis, Yarosh, Toneybuk, Pravy Sektor are against it. In Novorosiya there are pro and anti talks factions but leadership there is more secure. It’s very likely Poroshenko will be shown up as not in charge or just killed. We could have a Yarosh dictator take power who knows. Word is CIA have little hold, they will obviously back Poroshenko to the hilt. Putin is in the background though and the KGB lads think every step through to the Nth degree. It’s 50/50 as to whether this lasts.

Just to clarify the point, Ukrainian people were told the rebels were a bunch of drunks and drug addicts and a couple of Chechen terrorists to be mopped up in a week or two. (They have 100% oligarch controlled media). When it didn’t happen and the tide turned they announced a Russian invasion. So now Putin forces Poroshenko to deal direct with the rebels. Ukrainian people are realising they are being lied to. If it’s a Russian invasion he’s hold talks with Putin. If the rebels are drunks and Chechens why they fought the “invincible Ukrsine army” to a standstill? Btw the losses here are immense. There are 30-40k casualties in Ukraine army alone. Civilian deaths in Donbass and rebel militia losses much much less. It’s been a turkey shoot. The most dramatic collapse of a national army in modern warfare. They’ll be writing books on this one.

I do not remember anybody saying anything about 2 weeks of fighting. Ukrainian Army used push tactics like in Slavyansk trying to encircle cities so there will be less civilians killed. Here are the pictures of Grozny after the Russians and Slavyansk after Girkin run away. Rebels brought the army to the stand still? In 2 months rebels lost 70% territory, they could not mobilize 10000 man, majority of Russian Kazaks run away and left their positions. This info is not from me that was reported by Girkin and his commanders a month ago. Google it. And suddenly… Lost Russian paratroopers on APC loaded with live ammunition with no insignia. Mig-29 are being shot. 30 tanks appeared from nowhere 100 miles from rebel controlled teritory and Russian paratroopers started to die on holidays from strokes. Sounds like some kind of miracle.
