Firefighters tackle overnight blaze in Temple Bar

The fire was at a disused building next to Oliver St. John Gogarty’s pub. There are no reports of injuries.

Updated at 7.55am

DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE responded to a fire at a derelict building next to Oliver St. John Gogarty’s pub in Dublin’s Temple Bar last night.

The fire was at an disused telephone exchange building next to the busy night-spot, according to the fire service. It was initially reported by some outlets that the fire was at the pub itself.

The fire has now been extinguished.

There are no reports of any injuries, a garda spokesperson said.

It’s believed the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

Thank God that didn’t spread next door to a full house, that could have been very nasty. Plaudits to the amazing job that the fire service do, they really are soooooooooooooooo under paid for the extreme danger they put themselves in and the amazing and heroic work they do.

Written by a fireman. They choose to do the work and get very well paid for it. Part time fire fighters are on a super earner. They get a yearly wage and the call out per hour is mighty.

Don’t like the pay, don’t do the job. How many firefighters are killed in Ireland every year? Not exactly fighting on the front line.

Wow! If it’s such a well paid “non front line” job why aren’t you all working in the fire service? Fools to think they’re well paid. No amount of money is enough for them as far as I’m concerned. Not only tackling fires but having to face abuse and attacks on so many call outs too. Cop on people.

@gracie @fortycoats maybe someday you’ll need the fire service badly, then you will realise the dangers firefighters put themselves in for thankless idiots like yourselves. And no the wages for being a retained firefighter isn’t great for 90% of Ireland’s firefighters so get your facts right before spewing crap on here! Have a nice day!!

I’m not a fireman nor have none in my family. I do however appreciate the men and women who risk their lives rushing into burning buildings while everyone rushes the opposite direction. The reality is they risk their lives to save ours, that IMO is why I believe they are not paid enough. Add in the fantastic job they do at RTA’s and the amount of lives they save there and their wages should be off the scale. I think with the anniversary of 9/11 coming up tomorrow and the amount of firefighters that lost their lives rushing into buildings collapsing around them as everyone else was getting as far away as possible and I think you’ll find my opinion is totally justified.

@Anthony. The circular on the last LA is available for anyone to read. I have my facts correct. I think if the public in general were aware of the standard yearly wage and then the hourly wage thereafter on call out the number if red thumbs would be a lot less. There are people doing various types of high risk work earning a lot less. Take the Civil Defence volunteers doing their work for nothing.

@Gracie the part time firemen are on a yearly retainer which isn’t much, they depend on calls after that..if they don’t get calls they don’t get paid. They are also on call 365 days a year 24 hours a day not like a week on week off..they are still entitled to welfare as well so that tells you straight away that they aren’t making a fortune. They give up their life to be on stand by to get to their local station within 3-4 minutes of their beeper going off which is constantly attached to them. So for you to say what you said in your first comment shows how much you know..by the way I’m not a fireman either in case your wondering

Lucky to say though I have stability in a job that I love doing, lets hope you never need our help… I might be too busy in my 142d merc leaving my €2million mansion in malahide or counting my money
As for you forty coats can you explain who is on frontline then so, do you go and put these fires out, or attend to the medical emergencies along with us, NAS/doctors/nurses and all health staff across the city/country.

Firefighters do a good job which they’re paid for. Same as doctors, nurses, Gardai and the rest. They’re not volunteers, martyrs or heroes. If they’re not happy with the pay they can do something else. Like the rest of us do. If I ever need them they’ll be there because it’s their job to be. Fair play, keep it up.
