Mission Accomplished: Michael Noonan confirms the deal that will save Ireland €1.5 billion

The Minister for Finance is having a pretty good Saturday.

MICHAEL NOONAN IS having a good Saturday.

The Minister for Finance has got official confirmation from the rest of the EU’s finance ministers that Ireland can pay back its IMF loans earlier than expected

The agreement was made at an informal meeting today in Milan. It will potentially save the State €1.5 billion over the next five years.

Enda Kenny has described the deal as a “significant achievement”.

Speaking after the meeting, Michael Noonan said it was another “piece of the jigsaw” in getting Ireland’s economy back on track.

“I am delighted to be able to announce today that we have now cleared all the political hurdles required to support our plan to replace portions of our IMF loans with cheaper market funding,” he said.

Following discussions with the leaders of various institutions earlier in the week, there were three important hurdles to clear this weekend: support from Eurogroup Ministers, Ecofin Ministers, and our bilateral lenders, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark.

Noonan said that he was hopeful that the NTMA will be in a position to refinance the first tranche of Ireland’s IMF loans by the end of this year.

“This is a further piece of the jigsaw of improving our debt sustainability and will have real and positive impact for the Irish taxpayer”.

It is good news. But first step in many needed to remove bank debt from the taxpayer.

If it means tax breaks in reality any savings will be given to Tierneys farce. Still better than having to find more savings in the household. As it stands the decision to pay the bin men of water men in January stands

@Ian, Micheal Noonan may have been the worst cabinet minister this country has ever had, he was a disaster in Justice, a disaster in health and now a disaster in finance.

He confuses the stock market doing well with the economy doing well, he thinks short term games about figures is the same as long term stability, he’s replaced progressive taxation with a load of regressive stealth taxes that take no account of how much a person actually has, he’s done nothing to stop what happened in the 2008 crash happening again, not a damn thing, no reforms….he’s a terrible minister…these are the people who foamed at the mouth when BL and BC were struggling, and they ended up doing the exact same stuff.

He’s not done any financial reform that’s his biggest failure, we should be doing that at home and pushing for it at EU level, and through diplomatic channels pushing the US to do it as well as all banks globally are interconnected now.
I’m not a member of any party ATM and I consider myself neutral, there are 1-2 good minister in this cabinet he’s not one of them.

@O’Reilly 75% of SFs current membership were not even born when she was killed, and nobody in the SF party has been even connected with the murder. For all you know it was provos who were not members of SF.
Every party in this state except the Greens, ULA and PD’s came from violence. FGs predecessor party oversaw a govt where rebels were marched by soldiers over land mines, where prisoners chained in rooms had grenades thrown in through the windows. FFs predecessors thought the Oath of Allegance was worth a civil war in 1921 but just an ”empty formula” duing the 30s when they got a sniff of power, and one of their longest serving leaders kept us neutral in a war against a genocidal maniac trying to exterminate and entire race and paid condolences on his death. Labour had the history of violence with the citizens army and the stickies….they all came from violence.

You don’t get expenses for things related to your job? So if you had to go to cork on the train for work of fly to the UK for a meeting you would pay that out of your own salary? That’s not actually terribly legal, you should probably talk to someone about that.

TD’s get around 7 million a year in expenses and allowances and senators another 2. The entire cost of salaries and allowances and expenses for Councillors is around 25 million a year.

You shouldn’t tell lies, it’s bad for democracy. We can berate them for genuine errors but lies just reduces trust and makes us worse off.

    Sean

Ireland being granted permission to pay back IMF debt earlier – thanks to Mr Noonan’s negotiation skills – means savings in annual Interest charges of approx €300 m + for next five years.

The Debt mkts are kinder to Ire now as overall national debt position is stablished and country is on road to economic recover, so IMF debt can be replaced with much cheaper debt.

€300 m + annual saving represents real cash that the Gov can utilise for each of next years.

Reducing USC would offer the smartest option for this “windfall” as every taxpayer gains and more spending power means more economic activity; jobs, taxes etc.

Using the €300 m in this way, as opposed to offsetting against Nat Debt, creates more immediate value for all.

Mr. Noonan now needs to get cracking on some sort of relief from EU for Ireland’s Banking losses, now capitalised as part of our Nat Debt.

This circa €60 bn hot potato should be charged as a Project Cost in EU’s own Budget, in bedding in Euro project.

Reclassification in this way would reduce annual interest charges here by about €2 bn, and reduce or ND by a third.

After all, each eurozone nation will benefit into the future from the lessons learnt from Ireland’s 2002 to 2008 experience, where cheap money and egregious regulation by ECB and our own Central Bank led to the nightmares.

€60 bn absorbed over say 10 years on EUs books is Petty Cash, whereas with Ireland, it’s serious dough.

Get hustling that EU lot again Michael!

This is all smoke and mirrors, the bank bailouts ran into €70,000,000,000, and we still have moral hazard with depository and investment banking not separated, too big to fail banks gotten bigger, no new rules on lending to prevent more subprime, bankruptcy rules that mean the reckless can go back to where they where but genuine people are stuck….
The true cost of what happened though will be the moral hazard, the banks and financial firms now know that the market forces won’t be allowed near them, they can take whatever insane risks they like and if it all goes to hell the state will rescue them and they themselves won’t even have to pay the full bill the taxpayer will, but if they win the profits are all private.

We should have kept the banks in public ownership until every cent was made back and instead of paying that money out or spending it we should have locked it into a fiscal reserve fund to stave off cuts and allow stimulus in a future recession, not done the bailouts without a string of key regulations banning commodious and other risky trades and putting up a wall between depository and investment banking, breaking up the big banks. That was the smart pragmatic way to do it…but instead we take a kick to the balls instead of a punch in the face and say thank you.

Great, fine, whatever. We can debate the legitimacy of the debt till the cows come home.

That isn’t actually a practical proposal of how to change things for the better right now, is it? You don’t think we should have to pay back some portion of our debt. So which bit don’t we pay back? How much will we save? How much does that save compared to whatever the consequences of not paying it back are.
