Australia sending 600 troops to join US against Islamic State - but not for combat

400 air personnel and about 200 military personnel followed a formal request from Washington for Australia to contribute to the international coalition.

AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER Tony Abbott said today his country would deploy 600 troops to the United Arab Emirates to join the US-led international coalition gearing up for war against Islamic State jihadists.

Abbott’s announcement comes two days after Canberra lifted its terror alert level to “high” on growing concern about Australian jihadists returning from fighting in Iraq and Syria.

Abbott said the deployment of about “400 air personnel and about 200 military personnel” followed a formal request from Washington for Australia to contribute to the international coalition against the rampaging Islamist group.

He said Australia was “not deploying combat troops but contributing to international efforts to prevent the humanitarian crisis from deepening”.

“There are obviously further decisions to be taken before Australian forces will be committed to combat operations in Iraq,” Abbott told a press conference in Darwin.

“Nevertheless, Australia is prepared to engage in international operations to disrupt and degrade ISIL (IS) because of the threat that this murderous death cult poses not just to the people of Iraq, not just to the people of the Middle East, but to the whole world including to Australia.”

The US has been working to forge a coalition against IS jihadists in Iraq and Syria, with Secretary of State John Kerry in the Middle East to shore up Arab support.

‘Focus on Iraq, not Syria’

The Australian deployment to UAE — a staging post for the country’s military operations into the region — will include eight RAAF F/A18 combat aircraft, an E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft, and a KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker and Transport aircraft.

The defence force was also preparing special forces soldiers to serve as military advisers to assist Iraqi and other security forces tackling IS, the prime minister added in a statement.

Abbott said the deployment was focused on Iraq and not Syria.

“At this point in time, Australia is not intending to operate in Syria,” he said.

“The legalities of operating in Iraq with the consent and welcome of the Iraqi government are obviously very different from the legalities of operating in Syria, which has a government that Australia doesn’t recognise.”

The Australian leader added that if combat operations took place, they could last “months rather than weeks, perhaps many, many months indeed”.

The decision was backed by Labour opposition leader Bill Shorten, who said in a statement he was “reassured that our support is being provided at the request of, and in full co-ordination with, the Iraqi government”.

But Greens senator Scott Ludlam warned Saturday before the announcement that greater Australian involvement in the Middle East could increase the possibility of a domestic terrorist attack.

John Blaxland, a military expert at the Australian National University’s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, cautioned Australia was committing “a large chunk” of the defence force “and we haven’t thought through the ramifications both in the Middle East, in our region, and also domestically”.

“There’s a limit to what we can do effectively, and by doing as much as it looks like we are going to do, and perhaps more in the Middle East, we are opening up for things to happen in our neck of the woods,” Blaxland told Sky News.

Australia joined the US in an international effort to transport weapons to Kurdish forces fighting IS extremists in northern Iraq. It also conducted humanitarian air drops in besieged Iraqi towns.

I see Australia has for some weeks been talking up the terrorist threat and has now declared a status of “high alert” on terrorism are few days ago.
This is obviously preempting their declaration of war and siding with the USA…. priming the population, saying it is necessary to go to war…. more propaganda bullshit.

All Islam? So almost 2 billion people should give up their beliefs and their culture because you don’t like it? Despite what you think, not all Islam is incompatible with western culture. Ahmadiyya and Quranism fit in perfectly. There are many devout Muslims who contribute hugely to western culture and society, but you want to deny them their right to freedom of religion because of extremists and radicals. That means you support some of the exact same things as IS; no freedom of religion or freedom of expression, and genocide.

There is noting wrong with using RT as a source, I have listened to many interviews with Robert Fisk , Noam Chomsky, John Pilger , Paul Craig Roberts, Max Keiser and many more people who have vast experience and knowledge and all on RT. These people hardly get a look in on the western MSM. You need to open your eyes.

Not to mention freelance journalists Kevin Barret and Finian Cunningham that write for Press TV.

“When this story broke I ran back into the newsroom and saw how we were covering it already and I just knew I had to go,” she said.

“It was the total disregard to the facts. We threw up eyewitness accounts from someone on the ground openly accusing the Ukrainian government [of involvement in the disaster], and a correspondent in the studio pulled up a plane crash before that the Ukrainian government had been involved in and said it was ‘worth mentioning’.

“It’s not worth mentioning. It’s Russia Today all over, it’s flirting with that border of overtly lying. You’re not telling a lie, you’re just bringing something up. I didn’t want to watch a story like that, where people have lost loved ones and we’re handling it like that.

“I couldn’t do it any more. Every single day we’re lying and finding sexier ways to do it.”

“But Greens senator Scott Ludlam warned Saturday before the announcement that greater Australian involvement in the Middle East could increase the possibility of a domestic terrorist attack.”

Does Senator Ludlam think that the Australian government should let terrorists dictate its foreign policy?

Probably. Isn’t that how Leftists usually operate? Chamberlain would be proud of this appeaser.

Ciaran; Abbott has been gagging to be asked to join by the USA, his “pick me…pick me” comments over the past few weeks has been nauseatingly sycophantic in the extreme.

Another example of Australia crawling up the USA’s ar$e. Instead of crying poor and taking funding from the most disadvantaged, instead of plundering our natural resources and not taxing big mining accordingly, instead of pandering to big business and exploiting the working class with gradual erosion of hard-won working conditions, instead of raping our beautiful country, (dumping in the Great Barrier Reef to appease miners, ridiculous logging in Tasmania threatening old growth trees for a logging industry that only makes up 1 or 2% of Tasmania’s economy), instead of scrapping and/or limiting much-needed reform such as the Gonski Plan for education, instead of ignoring the facts of climate change (“It’s crap,” claimed Tony Abbott), instead of developing our burgeoning natural energy sector, instead of wasting time, money, and effort trying to discredit Julia Gillard and the achievements of the ALP…..I could go on….but no. The mad Abbott decides to up the terror rating, spend ridiculous amounts of money on crap fighter planes that are out of date and submarines that won’t even be built in Australia (so much for supporting local industry), and worst of all, send our loved ones to fight in a war that will ultimately solve nothing here in Australia. Nothing good can come of this. “Politicians hide themselves away, they only started the war. Why don’t they go out to fight? They leave that up to the poor.”
