€50 million worth of properties - including the GAA's birthplace - sold at auction

Hayes Hotel went for €650,000. But that was a drop in the ocean at the RDS today.

A FULL HOUSE at the RDS – as well as 4,000 online bidders – snapped up €50 million worth of properties at the latest Allsop auction today.

Five Dublin developments, including two in Lucan and Malahide that went for over €4 million each, made up €12 million of that spending.

Overall, 194 properties sold for €54.5 million, with urban properties the main attraction of the day. That makes today the biggest sale of properties in Irish history.

The catalogue of properties was not, however, made up of distressed properties.

Robert Hoban, Director of Sales, Allsop Space added: “We are thrilled with the results of today’s auction. There was a distinctly non-distressed set of properties.

“The top two prices made were for a private seller selling two large Dublin investments. We hope that the turner cornered by this auction is a reflection of the market as a whole.

“The number of people in attendance at today’s auction was our biggest yet, with standing room only in the RDS at times.

“Interest wasn’t limited to Irish based buyers, Duvillaun Beg Island located off the west coast of Ireland sold to a European buyer for €105,000.”

The headline lot was the birthplace of the GAA, Hayes Hotel in Thurles, which sold for €650,000.

A set of apartments and houses at Ascail Rois, Carrickmacross in Monaghan was sold for €1.925 million, nearly twice its reserve price.

A garage and workshop on Dublin’s Bolton Street sold for €650,000 – three times the reserve.

Hopefully something decent is made of Hayes and it isn’t forgotten about as the founding place of the GAA

It seems the raison d’être of The Journal is to talk up the property market for daddy site Daft.ie. Let’s get everyone “in the mood” slavering over multimillion gaffs getting snapped up in a stampede…. the language of this piece is forking baulksome. I dunno, at least pretend to be objective!…. SIGH

Would not be at all surprised if it was one of Quirkes casino companies that bought it, if would have no problem getting planning permission there with his friendly local TD at the helm, I think it is no coincidence that every factory in thurles bar one has closed in the last 30 yrs, this coincides with a certain TDs reign, People of Tipperary its time for change, we can not survive on medical cards and planning permission alone, we need industry for our towns

A museum, now what do we want another museum for, keep it as a hotel, run it properly as a hotel, create employment by keeping it as a functional hotel, not a museum that will be looking for hand nuts to keep its doors open, Thurles has nothing on its main street only shops and take aways if this amenity closes, the people of Thurles deserve employment not a museum to watch more of their tax wasted.

Considering we have a social housing problem wouldn’t it be better if the Government rented these, and kept ownership of the housing stock. Or sell them to people that want a home not a investment. Shelter should be seen as a basic need in society by our politicians not as a profit centre. Then all our housing policy should be about affordability rather then profits.
