More staff shown the door at Microsoft, though Irish workers should be safe

Latest layoffs the next round of company’s 18,000 job cuts.

MICROSOFT HAS ROLLED out another round of job cuts as it continues moves to slash thousands from its global workforce.

Today’s layoffs came as part of the software company’s initial announcement in July that it would cut 18,000 staff – or 14% of its workforce – mostly from the Nokia division Microsoft picked up when it bought out the mobile phone company in 2013 for €5.4 billion.

It was recently reported that Microsoft planned to ditch the Nokia brand name from all its devices and instead give the Lumia moniker to its flagship mobiles.

About 13,000 staff were cut in the first phase, while further positions went in some of the tech company’s US operations today - despite previous claims the sites would not be affected.

Irish staff should be safe

TheJournal.ie understands the job cuts won’t affect staff in its Irish offices, where Microsoft employs about 2,000 staff and recently announced plans to expand its European headquarters.

The company’s global workforce had swelled from 99,000 to about 127,000 after the Nokia buyout.

Microsoft previously said it expected to pay up to €1.2 billion in charges for the layoffs over the financial year, including about €600 million in severance pay and other beneiftts.

Earlier this week the company announced a 11% lift in the dividend being paid out on its shares.

Microsoft Ireland declined to comment.

To quote Satya Nadella My promise to you is that we will go through this process in the most thoughtful and transparent way possible.

Couldn’t be further from the truth , how they treat employees some with 20+ years service to avoid paying redundancy is disgusting

Few of us are gone at the end of the month and more are coming , irish jobs are not safe and some very nervous employees

Me and another colleague gone at the end of the month, I know a few heads cut already ,so Irish jobs are not safe, big re-org in there, to cut head count they will let you rot in a corner till you get so demoralised you leave and fall under attrition as opposed to job cuts, a lot of FTEs ( full time employees) are very nervous ! It is disgraceful how they treat employees , and some with 20+ years service; to avoid redundancies , to quote Satya Nadella My promise to you is that we will go through this process in the most thoughtful and transparent way possible.

127000 is a lot of people to manage , some payroll bill every month . Unfortunately wins 8 has been a disaster , good concept but just not very workable . I have ditched it and gone to Apple laptop and system and havnt looked back . Software uploads much faster , hp printer connected within 5 minutes . Bluetooth now working to the printer and was nightmare with wins 8 . The system wins 8 crashed during a presentation I had for my Boss so within an hr I had bought apple laptop and projector and went back in and finished it without a hitch . Never going back plus I now have image system in Apple for my photos and FaceTime with the kids and. Mrs anytime .
