TENSIONS HAVE BEEN running high in parts of Glasgow this evening after Scots voted to remain part of the United Kingdom.
In the Reuters video above, police can be seen breaking up some fights.
Meanwhile, a Channel 4 News video shows that large crowds were still present this evening at George Square, with police keeping Yes and No voters apart.
The Guardian reported that a group of skinheads was seen in the square at one point.
It said that the subway station at the top of shopping street Buchanan Street was temporarily closed.
Police Scotland commented on Twitter:
Earlier today, Scottish leader Alex Salmond said he would resign after losing an independence referendum that left the United Kingdom intact.
Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II called for “mutual respect” among Scots following a divisive campaign.
The anti-independence No camp secured a clear margin of 55.30 percent of the vote against 44.70 percent for the separatist Yes side.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said he was “delighted” about the result, adding:
Now the debate has been settled for a generation.
US President Barack Obama said he hoped to continue his country’s “strong and special relationship with all the people of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.
Salmond urged Yes voters to take heart from the 1.6 million who backed independence.
The queen appealed for Scots on both sides to set aside their differences, saying:
Despite the range of views that have been expressed, we have in common an enduring love of Scotland.I have no doubt that the Scots, like others throughout the United Kingdom, are able to express strongly-held opinions before coming together again in a spirit of mutual respect.
Tensions
Despite her pleas, tensions simmered in central Glasgow as horse-mounted police were forced to separate pro-union protesters from independence supporters in George’s Square.
Roads around the square were closed as police dispersed the crowd, although smaller groups amassed in other areas of the city centre, chanting and letting off flares.
Britain maintains credit rating
In response to today’s result, ratings agency Moody’s confirmed Britain’s credit rating at “Aa1″.
Moody’s decision to affirm the UK’s rating follows the outcome of the referendum on Scottish independence, which maintains the 307-year-old union, thereby preserving the country’s current institutional and fiscal framework.

Give over Seán. Northern Ireland doesn’t belong to Britain or Ireland. It’s its own country now. You can’t ask people who consider themselves British to leave just as much as you can’t ask people who consider themselves Irish to leave. It’s all of their home now and it has been for generations.
And by the way there’s been violence for how many years now and what has that accomplished? Nothing but innocent deaths. And what is the violence in Glasgow solving? Nothing but destroying what could be a great safe city to live in.

There was no choice involved with Hong Kong it reverted to China when the treaty expired,judging by the number of HK Chinese who applied for UK residence as well as Australian, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singaporeresidents most didn’t fancy being under Chinese rule.

@ I love my country, What an ignorant statement. There are many other possible reasons people didn’t turn up to vote…young people at college away from home, people away on holidays/work trips, people who are in hospital ill or giving birth, people attending funerals for loved ones etc etc

Seamus it’s not like they are going to starve because of a no win. The status quo plus big benefits have been gained. Scotland has got a lot as a result of staying within the union. And these yobs justify why Scotland is not ready to be independent just yet.
I think you’ve misunderstood who is causing the unrest!
Pol, the only reason a referendum was agreed to in the first place, was that Westminster were pretty confident of a no vote. Only when the opinion polls suggested otherwise, that London’s true colours kicked in and blatantly interfered in a democratic process with scaremongering tactics.
Furthermore, a breakdown of the votes have suggested that a majority of voters over 65 voted no and under 18s voted yes. The wealthy elite and tory voters overwhelming voted no. Those figures tell their own story. Fear and hope.
Finally, the campaign was horrifically biased from the outset. The no campaign and their corporate sponsors controlled the media. Muppets for the establishment employed Geldof and Branson to campaign for the no side. It was Horrific and hardly Democratic.
Same reason Enda gave the vote on the Seanad.

You’re also giving out that young people voted yes and old people voted no. Young and old are both part of Scotland and are both entitled to decide what happens to their country. Maybe when this generation gets older then Scotland as a whole will be ready for independence.
@Evin, good point. However, vested interests both within and outside of Scotland interfered with a due process called democracy. What about the medias role in all this Evin. They are meant to be impartial, far from it.

Seamus, as much as an impartial media can help democracy I don’t think it’s fair to give out if they’re not. Again it’s up to each citizen to look at the reasons for and against. If they don’t do that then they’ve made their choice by not caring enough.
Pontius, I agree that an exit poll would be ridiculously useful but again I don’t think it’s fair to blame anybody for not doing it. It’s not exactly a safe environment.

Poor aul Philip Boucher Hayes was on the end of a mugging yesterday evening in Glasgow while reporting for radio 1. Wouldn’t be a nice experience , but sounded funny. Mary Wilson commended his bravery and professionalism on air.

From what a friend in Glasgow told me last night this all started when a group of ‘unionist’ (in Glasgow that means Ranger supporters (Rangers, remember them?), OO members, and NI PUL’s).
It seems the unionist got wind of this and showed up waving union jacks…..it all kicked up from then on.
Pity they had to exhibit their ingrate bigotry and triumphalism when the rest of the world praised the Scots for their dignity during the campaign and its results.
Sorry, my dog jumped on my keypad and deleted an entire paragraph. So here i go again. Seems there was a rally for the people who voted/worked for the yes campaign. it was meant as a thank your for all the hard work and to congratulate them on the way they carried out the campaign…….
