Long week ahead: €87 million Euromillions winner has to wait until Thursday to claim prize

Someone in the country is probably having the best day of their lives today.

Updated 4.34pm

SOMEWHERE IN THE country, someone is probably having the best day of their lives today.

yay

As you’ve probably heard by now, the winning Euromillions ticket for the €86.7 million jackpot last night was sold in Ireland. (We’ll give you a minute to go and double-check your ticket before you continue reading this. Finished? Ok).

However they’ll have to contain their excitement: it’s going to be a few days before they can get their mitts on the gigantic cheque.

A spokesperson from the National Lottery explained the wait: “The prize money must be transferred from all participating lotteries across Europe so it’ll be close to Thursday before that process is complete.”

The Euromillions jackpot has been won seven times in Ireland since the game began in 2004. Four of those wins have been in the past 16 months.

The National Lottery is asking this lucky winner to do three things:

  1. Sign the back of the winning ticket
  2. Put the ticket in a safe place (but not so safe that they can’t remember where it is, obviously)
  3. Contact them AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Or at least, once the office opens at 9.15am on Monday.

Of course, there may be no rush. The winner may not want to attract publicity, especially if they have to travel to Dublin specifically to pick up the cheque – the National Lottery has not yet said where the winning ticket was sold.

The winner has exactly 90 days from the date of yesterday’s draw to claim the prize from National Lottery headquarters on Abbey Street in Dublin, so theoretically they could pick it up any time up until Thursday 18 December.

In the meantime, here are some things they could buy with their €86,700,000.

Every single one of the seven most expensive houses for sale in Ireland right now (and still have €36 million left to decorate them)

Gardai believe it was the INLA who thought, incorrectly, he had a large sum of cash they could extort. More freedom fighters liberating Ireland one civilian murder at a time.

@Ray, it’s called Google. Now this is the best bit: You’ll be brought to newspaper reports that actually quote the Gardai. Hopefully you can find use for such technology in the deep night of your wilful ignorance.

Darren, the article you link to specifically states that Gardai don’t think there was any paramilitary involvement in his murder. Perhaps you could change your smug comments and stop using the murder of a man to score your tedious political points

Well it didn’t take long for you to pop up even though the Gardai believe it was a criminal gang involving an ex-INLA man and not a paramilitary gang or murder. That’s why this poor man is not included under the remit of the Disappeared Commission. Stop being an oaf, Leo
