Taxi driver injured as his car is stolen by man armed with knife

A 31-year-old man has been arrested.

A TAXI MAN was injured during a carjacking in the early hours of this morning.

At about 1.30am, the 58-year-old driver dropped a passenger at the car park of a shopping centre in Palmerstown. While there, he was threatened and assaulted at knifepoint by a lone male. He was then forced from his vehicle.

The car was driven from the scene in the direction of the N4.

The taxi driver was taken to Ballyfermot garda station where he received medical treatment for his non-life threatening injuries.

During a follow-up operation, a 31-year-old man was arrested. He had been intercepted at a filling station near Maynooth in county Kildare by members of the Regional Support Unit.

He is being questioned at Lucan garda station and investigations are ongoing.

There has been an increase recently of attacks on taxi drivers, leading to calls for new grants to ‘carjack-proof’ vehicles.

President of the Irish Taxi Drivers’ Federation John Usher has also suggested that more extensive use of security cameras in taxis would reduce the number of attacks.

Or. a decent drug replacement programme set up with satellite clinics on every main road into dublin next to a train station. But don’t hold your breath, our politicians react only to NIMBE campaigns – and the best answer to any problem is to delay making a decision in the hope that it will go away.

I have recently fitted a dash cam vidio camera to my public service vehicle,it’s one smart piece of kit for less than 200 euro at Halfords,it plugs into the cigg lighter and you suction the unit to the windscreen and face it front or rear, with time date and sound recorder,it can be used to record while the car is sitting parked up,handy for identifying unwanted visitors, it can upload to a laptop to keep as evidence if needed, an essential item nowadays I would’nt be without one.
