Arklow RNLI at the scene of the sinking vessel. Arklow RNLI

Arklow RNLI rescue 3 people from sinking powerboat

The rescue was described as a ‘close call’ by RNLI volunteers.

THREE PEOPLE ON board a stricken powerboat were rescued yesterday afternoon by Arklow RNLI.

At approximately 2.45pm, the Ger Tighchleaar lifeboat was tasked to the vessel that was reported to be taking on water two miles South East of Arklow.

Rescue

Rescuers decided to get the casualty vessel back to port as quickly as possible and a towline was quickly established.

Everyone was brought ashore safely, but RNLI volunteer Aidan Downey said:

This was a close call, if there had been any delay in alerting the lifeboat, this vessel would have been lost, thankfully we were able to get to the casualty in the nick of time.

The salvage pump was used to remove water from the boat and the vessel was re-floated successfully and returned to her berth at Arklow Marina.

Gravel Pitt, your comment shows yours your complete ignorance of this wonderful organisation, how it is funded and run and how it is manned. In fact your comment shows your ignorance full stop.

When you’re on the brink of drowning, Gravel Pitt, you don’t give a damn if your rescuer has the letter ‘R’ for royal on his uniform, you just want to be saved.

Wasn’t aware of any storms yesterday.
Do speed boat drivers need a driving licence?
Health and safety , RSA might like to get involved.
    Maybe a sea safety authority.

No legal requirement as yet for for a powerboat licence on private leisure craft however a lot of people have done powerboat courses, myself included. However you can’t licence for failures in machinery, that looks like an inboard engine boat, most likely the bellows around the out drive failed, or maybe a seal on the drive, even an engine hose failing on a raw water pick up could cause it to take on water. Thankfully all are safe and thankfully the RNLI are there to help, next time you see a collection dig deep!

Do the pumps rely solely on the engine to work? Would it not be prudent to carry an auxiliary pump? After all it must be preferable to wait for rescue on the boat rather than in the water.

Often wondered if these boat owners are required to compensate the RNLI for rescue, like us ordinary mortals do if we call the Fire Brigade, after all they could have lost a valuable boat.
I’ve been told a lot of ports don’t even charge for mooring, try parking your car for free.

If you know of a port that doesn’t charge mooring fees let me know. I know of only one in Ireland.
