The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Martyn Landi/PA Wire

Apple shows no signs of slowing down as iPhone sales top 10 million

The figure also includes the four million devices sold within the first 24 hours of pre-order sales.

MORE THAN TEN million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units have been sold in its opening weekend.

The company sold one million more devices compared to the same period last year, where it sold 9 million Phone 5S and 5C devices.

This figure also includes the four million devices the company sold within the first 24 hours of pre-order sales. The company did not provide a breakdown of sales between the two devices.

Both devices were launched in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK, and it’s expected that both devices will be available in 115 countries by the end of the year.

In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook described it as “our best launch ever” and that sales “exceeded our expectations… and we couldn’t be happier.”

He also said that the company “could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply.”

Both iPhones will be available to buy in Ireland and 19 other countries this Friday. The main providers, Vodafone, O2, Meteor/eMobile and Three, will offer 16GB, 64GB and 124GB versions on two-year contracts.

Why are people so against iPhones here? I’ve had them all since the first one and they’re all great. They aren’t gimmicky, they are simple and reliable, they are a little pricey but they’re extremely well made and their customer service is fantastic.
I suppose when one can’t afford an iPhone it can get frustrating and the only way to vent is by giving out about them.. People aren’t sheep for buying iPhones, they want good quality phones. Too many crappy androids on the market so to be safe it’s always easy to buy an iPhone knowing exactly how they perform.

yes. I’ve noticed the screens are very well made and not subject to cracking. Also battery’s are removable which is nice, as once they start to loose their charge its nice to know you can just slip another one in.

As someone who deals with phones as part of my job all of these things have known to have happened but not often and certainly not within the first 18months, therefor this is wear and tear of mechanical parts, the screens are GLASS ffs…don’t effin drop it on the ground if you don’t want it to break…ITS GLASS…as for the battery, they do this so you don’t go off and buy crappy aftermarket batteries and fry the phones logic board, put the original back in and claim its defective…if you need a new battery they are easily replaced using licensed vendors.
So again, another moron with absolutely no points to add..Apple never claimed it was indestructible, they just make the most reliable phone they can and its works.

@Shit you not. I don’t suppose you’ve heard of toughened glass, my phone has been dropped a number of times, the casing is damaged but the glass is not. Apple don’t want you replacing the battery because its one of the things that is defiantly going to wear out, especially when you have to charge the battery ever 12 hours. Why allow users to replace a battery when you can charge them huge amounts for someone else to do it. This is not a problem with laptops so why should it be with phones. ??

I think this is the problem. People who buy iPhones are often people who only own iPhones. They’re used to paying top dollar for quality and then rightfully turn their nose up at the flood of low end Androids. They have their place in the market, but they don’t compete with iPhones.
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT. The problem is when you talk about the iPhone in the context of other phones in the same price range. It’s simply undeniable, Apple products are noticably inferior to products such as the Sony Xperia Z2 and the Samsung Galaxy. They are significantly more expensive and in terms of performance, only match up with mid range Android phones from two years ago.
So you’re paying a premium for a cheaper product. The only reasoning I can think of is that a) these people are Apple fanboys b) they haven’t a clue about technology and don’t particularly care about switching or c) they are heavily invested in iOS and all of the purchases they made on iTunes and in the App store.
I think option c) is a fairly good reason. Ten years ago when iTunes got really big people equated buying an album on there with a album instore, they’re not the same. I fell into that trap too. I thought I was buying music, but you’re not. You’re purchasing a license. That meant that although I never spent that much on iTunes, every red cent that I spent was completely gone to waste when I bought an Android phone. There are no easy ways of transferring music over and all of them require expensive third party software. Apple changed the goal posts on media ownership and turned it into “licensing”, which you can only use on “licensed products”.
It’s a great way to keep you in the Apple ecosystem.

You are thinking of iTunes from 10 years ago. If you buy any music from iTunes there is no DRM restrictions on it and you can drag and drop it into an android device easily. Personally I use google’s music service and works perfect on my iOS and Android devices.

People often rail against apple products because they’re generally just not good value.
While they are very good with design of ui and ux, I’ve yet to see a point in paying so much for that alone. I don’t see much more than that on offer from them.

For myself, I dislike pretty much any organisation which is as closed as apple is. But that comes with being an open source fanboy.

Sheep really? I think people buy the Apple because they produce good quality products that have unbelievably good reliability. I’v had my mac 5 years now and it’s still going strong. Before that I went through 3 laptops in the space of 3 years. People want products which are simple not complicated and work and for that they will pay a premium. That’s what Apple have done and with out them I’m sure the smartphone market would be no were near as advanced as it is now.

The build quality is very good on all previous models of the iPhone I can’t comment on the latest model but I can tell you i still have an iPhone 4 which works today and never had a problem with it although I’m sure it’s really slow compared to today’s standards. In my opinion Apple are held to much higher standards than other competitors for some reason.

Regarding the 1GB ram comment. The software which they use utilises 1GB very well cramming more ram into the phone only serves as getting into a numbers war. Doesn’t matter if I have got 5 gigs of ram if the software is bad it’ll still run slow and will on mean it crashes faster.

But Bon, you say you don’t want to comment on other people and yet you state the only reason they don’t have an iPhone is they can’t afford them. Ie self contradiction. Is it possible perhaps that people just enjoy the extra functionality of Android phones? It all fundamentally comes down to understanding and comfort level with technology. In general, Android needs a bit more user knowledge and input and therefore attracts a different group. I like to think of the iPhone as the Duplo of Lego, big clunky bricks, pretty easy to use, an idiot can navigate it but you can’t achieve much. Android is more like the Lego technics, more challenging, but if you can understand it you can do much more.

Stephen, It is very frustrating trying to explain to people who have no technology expertise how apple are essentially ripping them off. I had a conversation recently with my brother in law where I had to explain to him that no his iPhone was not free and that it was costing him over 1000 euro on an 18 month contract. That was the iphone 5. Now the iphone 6 is out and it will cost someone on a plan around 1400 euro for 2012 technology in a nice shiny case. Its laughable, but there is no talking to people.

Ok, but what about the screen? HTC had a HD screen on the One (M7) 18 months ago so it’s not like its new technology. I haven’t seen the iPhone 6 but apparently if you put it side by side with the Galaxy S5, HTC One (M8) or Sony Xperia Z3 there is a noticeable difference in quality. Also the battery life is worse then on Android phones and the camera definitely is not up there with the Xperia Z3 or Nokia Lumia 930.

All of this wouldn’t be a big deal if the iPhone 6 wasn’t the dearest phone out there. If I was paying that much for a phone Id want to have the best of everything and at the moment it doesn’t.

Not sure who your source is on the screen, but apparently the screen on the 6 plus is the best LCD out there, beating the HTC One M8. The Galaxy’s OLED screen still tops it and the Z3 isn’t out yet so hard to really compare those two. http://displaymate.com/iPhone6_ShootOut.htm

The battery life isn’t really a fair comparison since the phone is just out, although if you want to go down that route early reviews have said two days, I’m not seeing that with my 6 plus but I’m a heavy user.

Again, you bring up the Z3 which isn’t out, so that one isn’t very fair. Nokia do amazing cameras and I haven’t personally used the 930 or seen any reviews, so can’t comment. The 6 plus does take some amazing shots though and in my limited experience works really well in low light.

My source is http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/iphone-6-plus-1264566/review and they compared the iPhone 6 to the Z3 because they have had access to both phones.

Regarding battery life. My Z1 has a stamina mode which is designed to conserve battery life and does a good job of it too, Samsung & HTC both have their own power saving modes but for some reason Apple doesn’t. According to the review above the iPhone 6 battery life is much better than the 5S but still lags behind Android phones despite not having a power hungry HD screen. They do tests involving playing videos for a certain length of time and seeing how much battery power is lost from 100% charge.

Agreed about Nokia. My N8 had the best camera I’ve ever used on a smartphone as well as a Xenon flash. Unfortunately Symbian was shit, hence the upgrade to Android.

I don’t anyone in this comment section said they were the best phones. It is all down to preference though. I’ve been using Iphone since original 5 now. My main reason is that I’m a Macbook user for work and its to simple to have all my contacts, calendars, messages etc synced over to one another. As well as the customer support which I have never had any trouble with and no problem replacing broken/damaged products. The HTC one M8 is such a beast of a phone just for my needs at the minute I got with apple.

The 5s and 5c weren’t available for pre-order, so if anything that 10 million is a poor result when compared to last year.

The 5C was available to pre-order but from what I remember it didn’t get many as the initial demand wasn’t very high for it.

    “The 5C was available to pre-order ”

    You’re right, I stand corrected.

Have had an iPhone ever since the original, and not once have I ever had one single problem. I will be upgrading to the iPhone 6 eventually.

I pay for quality, consistency and reliability. Plus, Apple customer service is outstanding, and some people forget about quality of customer service when they’re buying.

I don’t pay for “pack as many features in as you can, and hopefully half of them work”
