The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1.#BALBRIGGAN: A man was shot dead in Dublin this morning. A woman was also hit in the upper thigh in the incident in Balbriggan.

2.#MCNULTYSHAMBLES: The ongoing controversy over Fine Gael’s nominee for the Seanad by-election rumbles on. John McNulty today stepped down from the board of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, saying that his resignation was not linked to the furore over his appointment, rather to do with internal rules. Meanwhile, one Fine Gael TD said people are “disgusted” with how the party is run, while a woman overlooked in favour of McNulty left the party.

3.#TIGER KIDNAPPING: Three women were taken at gunpoint as part of a tiger kidnapping in Dublin. The incident occurred in Malahide this morning.

4.#INQUEST: Dhara Kivlehan, who died after undergoing an emergency c-section in Sligo General Hospital in 2010, did not see a specialist for 60 hours after she was diagnosed with acute renal failure. The inquest into the death heard that the delay was “not appropriate”, but did not affect overall care.

5.#GOING NOWHERE: The chairman of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) says he has “no intention of resigning” nor do any of his commissioner colleagues. Simon O’Brien told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that GSOC had learned from the affair and they “wanted to move on”.

Sadly the HMV in Cork was bought by golden discs.

Prices went up and the selection of world cinema section is now pitiful.

I wish them well however it’s easier to download now and cheaper. Therefore I am afraid that the headlines may read next year again that they have closed. Peats comes to mind and they had a huge initial public outpouring and support. Internet has taken over. Again though I wish them well.

Hope not. Plenty of HMV staff were rude and unhelpful, if they’re any good they should be happy to interview with the other prospective employees. Sounds harsh, but that’s life.

To all the red thumbs: HMV failed because of an outdated business model, if they’re to have ANY hope of surviving this time round they have to style themselves as a pure music store that gives you something you can’t get online… great face-to-face customer service. I’ve been buying stuff in HMV for years and I’ve countless negative experiences with staff in various branches because many of them clearly don’t care about the job and have no interest in being helpful. I’m not saying everyone is like that, but it was bad enough that it’s something I’d associate with the brand. Having worked there before shouldn’t automatically grant you a job there now, there are plenty of people looking for a job who’ll take pride in their work. If a former employee already does this they’ll sail through an interview with new HMV because they’ll be able to communicate this AND show they have experience in the stores. If not, they lose their job to someone who’ll do it better.

The red thumbs may indicate that nobody else has had this negative experience with the staff in HMV. I for one have always found them to be quite helpful where needed but it’s music store, I don’t exactly need a world of guidance on my purchases.

I’m not talking about guidance necessarily, more like general enquiries about whether something is in stock or when something is coming out, or exchanging something defective. I’ve come across plenty of staff who were far more interested in faffing about on their phones than actively working and they lost the shop at least a few sales from me thanks to thta.

I always buy CD’s! There’s not a huge difference in the price unless you’re downloading illegally which I guess you could do from HMV too but it’s a little riskier. I’m a bit old fashioned this way but I like to have CD’s.

Seems like a good turn around. There was a lot of loyalty in the HMV brand and I presume having gone through the sale the new owners believe they can run a viable business. I expect free from massive debts and huge rent outgoings it’s in a better position to trade. Live bands playing in a nice touch too. Must be great for the old HMV staff as well.

Things have to change enormously for this business to be competitive. I never found their staff to be very knowledgeable about the product they were selling, prices were not competitive plus we always have the added cost of travelling to city centre/parkling/petrol/bus fare, whatever.

Honestly, I can’t see how they can compete against any online retailer. Few clicks and voilá, I have a CD sent to my workplace. Or even better, a few taps on my phone and I download the song I was listening to on the radio.
