Woman killed in Roscommon farm accident

Another woman was injured in the incident.

THE HEALTH AND Safety Authority has begun an investigation after a woman died on a farm in County Roscommon.

The HSA says that as of now, there is no indication as to how the accident occurred. Local radio station Shannonside FM reports that woman, named as 60-year-old Lucy Connor was injured by cattle on her family farm.

Another woman was injured at the Kilrooskey farm.

The death brings to 22 the number of people killed on Irish farms this year.

What I missed in this article is the alternative location proposed by the campaigners.

@Shane Dunne: Or the damage that the dumping will cause to local environment around Dublin Bay by saving money and dumping in the wrong place.

Dublin Port Company are saving money by dumping in an area vibrant with life creating the underwater equivalent of a Nuclear winter in an area that needs protecting. Pennies are being spared by this quango at the expense of a marine environment.

@Shane Dunne: What you also missed is the the EU Special Area of Conservation called North Bull Island didn’t exist before 1800 – it was constructed with silt dredged from Dublin Bay and since the building of the South Wall has grown towards Howth due to tidal deposits of, you guessed it, silt from Dublin Bay.

@Shane Dunne: All they need to do is to travel about 5 minutes more out of the bay past the sand banks (Burford Bank) that surround it. Then their waste would stay out in the Irish Sea. The current dumpsite inside the sloping side of the sand bank empties back into the Bay with the first easterly storm. The water is only 6 meters deep out there at the top of the sand bank

@Shane Dunne: killiney bay would be ideal to fill in the channels, might even make for more surfable days there rather than waiting on high tides!

They’re right. For the sake of the porpoise we should just allow the largest port in the country to silt up and become unusable. Sure, it would be disastrous for the local and national economy, but at least the porpoise will be safe.

It would be sad if porpoise are killed, but not dredging because of it is ridiculous. Maybe the use of some sort of sonar or Doppler emitter to deter sea life from the dumping area might be an option.

Ultimately, a cargo port north of Balbriggan, as proposed at the start of the century, would be a good idea, but Dublin Port will still have to exist (at a much smaller scale) for passenger and cruise ships. No doubt these campaigners will object to that too, or at least the skyscrapers that could be built on the newly reclaimed brownsite land.

@Brian Lenehan: In fairness Brian, they haven’t suggested that we allow Dublin port to silt up, rather that we stop dumping in a Special Area of Conservation… Maybe a more appropriate site could be found?

@Brian Lenehan: In this day and age sea mammals are under threat from all sides. Sea pollution, climate change, getting hit by vessels, plastic, fishing gear, the list is endless. There is always a solution for a situation like this. It just needs the will to do it with experts sitting down and exploring all options.
I`m sure the good people of Dublin want these precious porpoises protected.

@Brian Lenehan: Dredge the Port all they want no problem. Just dont dump the uckky silt from the harbour bottom for the swimmers and divers of Dublin bay to swim in. You would need to see the crabs and lobsters after dumping. They have an overcoat of silt on their backs and in the past a lot of the material dumped contained heavy metals. Eating lobster from Dublin bay with all the years of dumping is not a good idea.

Wouldn’t worry to much, if the porpoises are as intelligent as they are made out to be its safe to assume they will stay clear of the dredging.

The independent observers are from the “Charity” IWDG. They have worked for and with DPC to help them get the Planning Permission, to get them through the Oral Hearings. To get over the line with the EPA for a dumping licence. They are not independent the are paid consultant with Dublin Port and without the IWDG this dumping would not be happerning.

Harbour Porpoise are the smallest and very difficult to see. I raised these concerns when DPC applied for permission for expansion. There was an an bord pleanala oral hearing in 2014. The real danger to the porpoise is in pile driving as it could damage their ears, they are curious and may go to investigate. They use sonar to navigate and would have a terrible death if their hearing is damaged. They are a protected species, the dumping of silt is to be mainly in the Burford Bank. DPC dd not get an EPA license for dumping contaminated materials, after a huge campaign by our @LoveDublinBay facebook group and others.
