Dave Lee Travis given three month suspended sentence for indecent assault

The DJ was found guilty on Tuesday.

FORMER BBC RADIO DJ Dave Lee Travis has been handed a three month suspended sentence for indecently assaulting a TV personality.

The former Radio 1 star was found guilty of cornering the woman in a corridor of a BBC studio in 1995 and squeezing her breasts.

Sky News reports that when the sentence, which will be suspended for two years, was handed down, Travis looked down and said “Thank you, Your Honour”.

He hosted the breakfast show on BBC Radio 1, Britain’s main pop music station, between 1978 and 1980.

That slot, and his bearded appearance, led to him being nicknamed “The Hairy Cornflake”.

Travis’s victim told the court during the trial that he got a “weird sexual thrill” as he indecently assaulted her.

She said Travis approached her in the corridor of a BBC television studio where she was smoking and commented on her “poor little lungs”, before he squeezed her breasts.

She said the assault was “unbelievably weird” and he had an “intense stare”.

    I disagree.

These ‘celebrities’ used there status to influence their own sexual gratification on people that looked up to them. Even worse they felt that they were above the law, that the rules just didn’t apply to them.

I feel let down personally. So many of these people were part of my childhood. I never missed DLT on bbc radio 1 – he was one of my favourite DJ’s as a kid. This is what makes this so shocking.

A witch hunt….. Maybe, but well overdue.

I liked a lot of the music on Radio 1 and Top of the Pops but the interruptions by these egotistical males put me off listening to the radio station.
They really gave me the creeps.
These revelations do not surprise me at all.

The real sentence will come outside the court, no one will employ him and the public will not treat him good.

Yep it’s funny how certain behaviors are tolerated for years then become beyond the pale and vice versa.
50 years ago this would have been laughed off (by society if not the victims) as a bit of slap and tickle while homosexuality made you a pariah from decent society.
It will be interesting/scary to see the completely normal yet unhealthy types of behavior we now engage in that will become totally unacceptable in the years to come
Anyone care to venture what in the future will ruin your name forever?
Smoking? Being disparaging about people’s looks?
And what’s totally horrifying now that may be perfectly acceptable in 50 years time?
And yes I know this particular case was in 1995

That is why there should be a statute of limitations on non fatal crimes commited against those over 18 years of age. Making a report the bones of 20 years later is insane. A limit of say 7 years. Surely if you feel you have been wronged than that is enough time to make up your mind to go to the police.Crimes against children or those classed as vunerable should be exempt of course.

I do mean 7 years to report the crime not to take it to court.
