Doctors to train like airline pilots in simulation centres

The centre will recreate real life clinical scenarios using simulation models.

THE NATIONAL MATERNITY Hospital (NMH) plans to train its doctors just like airline pilots – in simulation centres.

Doctors will model surgical and obstetric emergencies simulated on state-of-the-art equipment and gain enhanced training, according to the hospital.

The equipment will allow for the simulation of crisis medical scenarios using state-of-the art technology and computerised mannequins to simulate real life situations.

Simulation centre

Here is a simulation centre in the US, which gives an idea of how it works:

“This project will allow us recreate real life clinical scenarios using simulation models.  This sort of training can help save lives. This increases situational awareness and puts medical teams in situations where they must work together at high speed to resolve issues that arise in an ever changing medical environment,” said Master of Holles Street, Dr Rhona Mahony.

“It requires space for training, high quality equipment, well-trained instructors, and tailored course material, but is hugely valuable in exposing trainees to the emergencies they are going to have to face.”

Midwives and doctors

She said that in order to continue to produce midwives and doctors who provide the highest standard of care and safety for patients the hospital needs to foster medical education and training.

This additional training comes at a cost. The NMH hopes to pay for the simulation centre with the proceeds they make from their third annual fashion show which is being held on 3 October in the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin.

The event will start a campaign to raise €100,000 to allow completion of the project. Last year’s event led to the raising of €1.5 million, due largely to some substantial donations generated subsequently from attendees at the event, including a single donation of €1.2 million.

Tickets are €100 and can be purchased from 01 637 3372 or info@nmhfoundation.ie.

I went to a simulation day for adult patients, they are unreal at providing feedback at where you go right and wrong in healthcare. Would love them to become commonplace. Maybe not with that price tag though.

Excellent idea, which should help address some of the issues associated with the (slowly) reducing work hours for doctors in training.

I’d question why our National Maternity Hospital needs to run a fashion show to pay for training of its staff though.

Because the hse and government and training bodies dont provide similar facilities . There is one in craigavon for adult arrest situations and critically Ill patients . There is nothing like the real thing but as proven in airline pilots , hours of simulated training makes a huge difference in emergency situations particularly .

I think this is a good idea. Because at the moment, in my opinion, the training system for doctors is outdated. They come out having learned wealth of knowledge but not much of an idea how to implement it. They don’t know the basics and get a couple of hours training on cannula insertion. Poor patients are just the guinea pigs then! The use of the simulation training will really help them especially with regards to their time. The more they know how to do something the less time they spend finding out how in the event of a patient becoming seriously unwell and nurses waiting on them to make a decision!

Have you ever had any medical training? How do you think med students learn how to do things like cannulation?

You can’t use a simulator to train someone to put in a canulla. Its the real world or nothing.

Except when you actually are trained to put in a cannula. In which case you do use a model!

What a load of bull. Doctors need to be sent back and spend another 7 years learning about nutrition. Instead of pumping poor unfortunate patients with toxic medications. Stay away from them if you can at all costs.become responsible for your own health.

@CeannComhairleDollop What absolute nonsense. When I see plane loads of nutritionists lead the fight against Ebola in West Africa then I’ll sit up and take notice. When a nutritionist enters an Ebola Clinic and says “now you look like you have far too little iron in your diet, what you need is plenty of spinach and soybeans, maybe some liver. No, not mine, settle down”
While we’re on the subject I don’t see any aromatherapists making their way to Ebola hit areas claiming a dab of lavender oil will do the trick or what about acupuncturists wiling to stick their needles in Ebola victims? I’ll eat my own left testicle if a reiki massage can stop an outbreak like flu, SARS, Ebola, measles etc. for serious illness it takes serious medicine.
Personally if and when I’m seriously ill I want the best trained doctors money can buy treating me, I don’t want lavender oil, a massage, two dozen needles in my “healing chi zone” or to be told I have to eat more fibre. As if shiteing more will help? I want the very best of 21st century medicine.

That makes absolutely no sense. So if I’m in agony from some obscure disease you’re seriously telling me I need to find a good nutritionist who’ll tell me to avoid gluten, strawberries and fat and to eat more fibre because a good shite cures everything. Whereas the best of 21st century medicine will administer pain relief, take blood tests, run scans to find out exactly what is wrong with me and then decide how best to treat my obscure disease.
I’ll go with the best of 21st century medicine rather than some fool telling what I should and shouldn’t put in my mouth every time. As I said, I’ve never heard any accident victim crying out for their nutritionist, when people are in agony they want a doctor with morphine.

What a great idea. If a patient presents himself with a serious ailment, like symptoms of flu, its comforting to know a Doctor has encountered a situation like this before in a flight simulator.
