Aldi scores massive sales boost as supermarkets declare all-out ad war

The German discount chain nearly doubled its advertising spend on the way to record turnover.

BUDGET GROCERY CHAIN Aldi has reported soaring sales amid an advertising binge from all the major Irish supermarkets.

The company recorded a 36% hike in the turnover of its UK and Irish business between 2012 and the end of 2013, hitting a total income of £5.27 billion (€6.75 billion) for the year – a new record for the retailer.

Its after-tax profits were up a massive 76% to £198 million (€253 million) for the same period.

Aldi reported that it had attracted 1,000,000 more shoppers to its stores in August last year than during the same month in 2012.

Big chains gunning for us, Aldi says

The company said the growth came despite the large supermarkets “actively targeting Aldi” and it had boosted its UK market share from 3.1% at the start of 2013 to its current level of 4.8%.

In Ireland, the company has been even more successful at taking business from the big three supermarket chains – Tesco, SuperValu and Dunnes – with its share of total customer spending now at 8.4%, according to the latest survey.

Together Aldi and Lidl, which has a slightly bigger slice of the Irish market than its German rival, have lifted their stake of the local supermarket business from 15% to 17% in just a year.

The company said its growth in the first half of this year had been even stronger than in the first six months of 2013.

An advertising offensive

Meanwhile, the latest supermarket advertising analysis has shown both Aldi and Lidl went on a media offensive this year as all the major chains upped their advertising in the competitive market.

The German pair accounted for nearly half of all advertising money flowing from the grocery trade,  according to Nielsen research carried out for Checkout magazine.

Aldi nearly doubled its advertising outlay in the second quarter of this year when compared to the same period last year, although Lidl still had the biggest budget of any grocery retailer.

Tesco had the second-biggest boost, increasing its advertising spend nearly 60% over the period.

Of the major players, Dunnes Stores relied the least on advertising, accounting for less than 10% of the total spent within the grocery market.

Aldi and Lidl ‘shouting louder’

Checkout editor Stephen Wynne-Jones said the German chains’ market share was still considerably lower than their competitors but both “shout louder” than the rest of the industry when it came to marketing.

He said the discounters were looking to both win the price battle and install strong “quality associations” among customers.

Supermarkets remain among the biggest spenders on advertising and all the major chains except Dunnes were in the top 10 advertisers across all industries.

@JDel: There was no such thing as child obesity when “the older generations” were children. So don’t go parking that on our shoulders. The obesity crisis in this country is down to the fact that your generation prefers processed food, that you just stick in the oven or the microwave or failing that a take away, cause there’s not much effort involved. God forbid, you’d go to the effort of peeling potatoes and vegetables. It is your generation that deals in instant gratification.

@Fifty Shades of Sé: I do agree with you on that front front, however in such instances one needs to make prepping and cooking smarter as opposed to harder. Batch cooking while not everyone’s taste is a viable option. Pressure cookers, slow cookers, halogen ovens, all geared toward making the cooking process faster. Rice in microwave packets, 10 min noodles, pasta, etc etc. Prep and cook it once and prepare enough for the week. Ignoring the issue will cause a bigger issue further down the line from the lack of nutrients in ones diet.

@Charles McCarthy: I this is quite inaccurate, it’s not hard to cook potatoes, the issue is the time it takes. In the time it takes to peel and boil the potatoes, you’d have your pasta/rice and whatever else cooked and ate and you’d be washing up. By not cooking potatoes you’re getting twenty minutes of your day back.

Steam a potato whole versus sliced on the job and let me know if their is a difference in cooking time. Traditional methods are not suitable for today’s lifestyle. A small counter top pressure cooker can cook a whole potato in 5 – 7mins.

@Oretani Wildlife: not all millennial who live at home are like you describe. I moved out twice, at 19 and at 23(second time, I had moved home due to unemployment for a summer). At 32 I,amilennial, have had to move home wiTh my parents again. In the weeks leading up to this, I found myself homeless. I’ve been unemployed for 9 months now, though I’ve been job hunting hard in that time. Had 2 job offers, both of which I accepted…and both of which fell through due to failures on the part of the employers.

Sure, my mum is doing all the cooking atm, for the dinners, but I’m only back a week. I’ve already said I’m taking breakfast on shrove Tuesday. I have also done all the ironing since I was home, and any other chores needed.

I hit an extremely low point in my life due to mental health issues stemming from nearly 20 years ago, and threading through my whole life since. I’m now starting a long road of healing. It wont be easy, but the one good thing is that there were never any drugs, or drink involved, which lessens the journey somewhat.

So yeah.. not all of us living at home find cooking hard. Some of us are in a really bad place.

@Dizzy: thanks. Unfortunately, for most of the past 20 years, asking for help has, for me, usually resulted in one of three things: being told no, being told I’m faking and don’t actually need help, or being ignored. I’m lucky to get a “yes” for every 20+ “no”s. Yet if anyone, including most people that have refused me help, has asked me for help, I have always done what I can, even if it means finding someone better able to help.

As such, I struggle so badly with asking for help. The message to me has always been that I do not deserve help. That I’m not entitled to any help, ever, but if I don’t help when others ask it of me, I’m wholly in the wrong, just as I’m in the wrong for asking for it in the first place.

So what if they don’t eat potatoes? Do farmers ever stop complaining? Times change and eating behaviours change, get over it.

Not often. Can’t afford to operate the electric cooker, so don’t often cook stuff. Can’t eat potatoes raw…

I hardly ever roast potatoes either. Sometimes I microwave a big potato. Zap it for 10 minutes – done.

More often I peel & boil a batch of baby potatoes. The next day if there are any left, potato salad, or slice & fry them up with an egg.

At weekends or whenever, when cooking stew, casseroles, curries, spag bol, chillies, cook a couple of extra portions for the freezer. No weeknight cooking necessary.

I love spuds but the quality of whats being sold is awful especially the roosters which seem to be all that’s on sale in most places. Easy way to have a quick meal is a packet of baby spuds, cooked in 10 mins with a few bits of broccoli thrown in and chicken fillets on the pan for 10 mins as well. Easy enough for a meal for 2, 3, or more in 20 minutes. Vary the veg and meat it’s still quick and if you are tired after a days work it’s not going to kill you.

Potatoes are pretty rank served as is and need a rake of butter/cream/salt/oil to be decent and that’s just a heart attack waiting to happen. Might have the odd baked one topped with something tasty like chilli. Usually I avoid for health reasons and only have as an occasional treat.

It all depends. I could easily go a week without having a potato. Some days I might eat a bit of rice, a bit of pasta, some noodles, maybe a bit of cous-cous. Perhaps some days I might avoid starchy carbohydrates altogether. On average, I’d say I eat at least one potato a week.
