Joan Burton told: 'The country wants Enda's head on a plate and you can deliver it'

Mick Wallace said people are sick with ‘cronyism in Irish politics’.

INDEPENDENT TD MICK Wallace told the Tánaiste that people voted for change in 2011 but didn’t get it.

During an exchange during Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil this afternoon, the Wexford deputy said the public’s trust of Fine Gael was now in tatters and asked Joan Burton to “pull the plug on this coalition government.”

The Tánaiste defended the government saying that unemployment is at the lowest it has been in five and a half years.

“There’s a significant fall the number of people unemployed and a huge rise in the number of people back at work.

“I agree the country has a long way to go, there are still 80,000 people formerly in construction who are on the live register. We want to build homes for the people who need homes.

Wallace described the jobs as “a race to the bottom in social protection.

The jobs are minimum wage and have no contract. It surprises me that you’re okay with that.

“We’ve put interests of big businesses before the people. People are sick to the back teeth of the cronyism.

The people of the country want Enda’s head on a plate and you can deliver it.

However Burton continued to defend the coalition saying that, “The country has progressed very significantly in terms of the banking debt we inherited.”

McNulty

Switching topic, Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald described Enda Kenny’s explanation of the McNulty affair as “waffle” adding that his answers have been “as clear as mud”.

To the public in general looking on the Taoiseach’s fingerprints are all over this appointment.

Burton replied, saying that the Taoiseach has explained himself on several occasions.

“You’re speaking about silence and evasion and refusing to answer questions. ”Your moral tone of outrage when you have nothing to say on the body of a man being found in a bog in Meath today shows you have two different sets of moral codes.”

The Tánaiste added nothing new to the McNulty controversy.

When questioned on the subject by Fianna Fáil TD Robert Troy – she said that at a meeting with the Taoiseach on Monday she proposed a memo for government in relation to appointments for state boards.

“In terms of state boards, if you look at the volume of public business and turnover … it is important they come from business backgrounds, HR backgrounds, public service and that they don’t all come from D4 but all around Ireland.”

They probably won’t, but if they do it will be a redeeming quality and could lead to them not going the way of the Greens and PDs at the next election.

If you really look at history, the other parties have been more progressive than Labour.

What’s Labour done in this govt?

    -A free labour scheme
    -Taking medical cards off people
    -Canceling universal healthcare plans
    -Hiking college fees

…those are conservative policies. Think about it.
All the progressive advances in ireland:
    -Introduction of medical cards
    -Free school
    -Free college
    -THe minimum wage
    -Free primary
-Restorative Justice and rehabilitation in criminal law
….all of those came from FF and the PDs…the supposed right wingers.

Labours not even a centre-left party. They seem to suffer from the same illusion the US Democrats do, if you behave like a conservative and you’ll get conservative votes but that doens’t work because people make political decisions with their irrational emotional subcoincious not their brains, so their cartoon image of you as a tax and spend lefty will never be eclipsed by the facts. Even though they’ve taken a chainsaw to the budget I still hear people say labour wants to just borrow and spend forever. All that happens when a centre-left party sells out is it looses it’s own base, it gains nothing anywhere else.

    1. There is no such thing as a Labour minister, govts are collective in Ireland no individual minister can go off on their own and do their own new policy without cabinet approval. If I’m minister for health I can’t decide to create an Irish NHS all by myself and do it alone
It was a FF government she served in.

    2. They loose all credit for bringing that in by Ruri Quinns actions after 2011, the student contribution charge, which began as a registration fee of 200 euro, was gradually expanded to 3000. Labour signed a pledge to reverse this charge and re-introduce free up front fees. Then when Quinn got into power he not only broke that pledge but began to advocate the polar opposite extreme: Full up front fees without any state backed loans system, only a grant for the absolutely dog poor, thus shutting the lower middle class, middle class and much of the working class out of third level.
So we can see now that the free fees thing is not something you get no matter who Labour is in power with, because the FG-Lab govt has been pro-full fees to a hilt.
What makes this particularly sad is that this was the ONLY major accomplishment in govt Labour was ever known for and they got rid of it. It would be like the US Democrats abolishing social security or the UK Labour party abolishing the NHS.

Morons. On top of that PR blunder they have now turned an entire generation of people at college age today off their party for the rest of their lives. Some of these people are 21-22 years old and will be living and voting for another 60-70 years and they will tell their kids not to trust Labour. Major blunder by Labour.

And yes, loathe as I am to agree with Joan on this fact, it is true. The government is responsible for this decrease…Now before you numptys in power start patting yourselves on the back, pumping out your chests and gloating, stop and consider how you achieved this. Hang around the departure lounge of any airport or ferry port in this country and watch families being torn apart as people he’s off in search of a better standard of living, a fair return for their taxes and a future for their children.
Forget the unemployment figures, how about comparing the numbers of people who are in work…Excluding Jobbridge…today with the number who were in work before the collapse. That is a real reflection on the job you’re doing, then we’ll chat about the health service and the job you’re there…

It’s interesting to note that no FG govt has ever been re-elected, ever. They never got in on their own merits they were only ever put in as a default alternative when the public was upset with something FF did. Even if they scrape back in this time they won’t last long. Eventually the FF ministers making the economic decisions in the Cowen-Bertie era will slip away replaced by new people who, age wise, were in school when those decisions were made and can’t be tagged with them. Around the same time, SF will begin to drop people like Martin Ferris and push forward new younger people not tainted by the troubles, when that happens FG-Lab won’t stand a chance.

Look at the polls even now, FF have made a balls of their comeback and have come up with no new ideas, SF are allowing themselves to be tagged with the notion (incorrect) that they have these mad radical economic policies…despite that the FF-SF block is drawing even or more than the FG-Lab block in polls. As it stands now it would be a hung dail with a load of indos needed by either side, and with FF coming up with no new ideas or putting forward no new faces it may be a SF-FF govt, but regardless of what permutation takes shape, it does not look good for FG and (Esp) labour.

Rump Fine Gael will be similar if not more.
If only 50% of the electorate vote (as is usual) they will mostly be supporting FF % FG.
This will be sufficient for a historic coalition of these two right wing parties.

Even walking out of govt today would not save Labour. If you look at the polls, there is something really interesting. FG dropped support but it’s Labour that hemorrhaged.

These parties ran on turning Ireland into a mainstream European social democracy, but continued governing the way FF did in 2009.
They have a sad history of rescuing FG and turning down chances to be the other main party with FF, they kept rescuing FG from the abyss with election pacts and now they’re doing it in govt too by endorsing conservative policies with no Labour policies part of the deal. Their one shot to change this was when Gilmore went, Burton could have said we want a new programme for govt that keeps to our 2011 promises:

-Some form of universal healthcare plan must go ahead or at least get STARTED
-Some kind of scheme (graduate tax, the old system restored) to make college fees up front free (this is something the CONSERVATIVES in Germany just passed ffsake!!)
-Eliminating water charges or at least allowing a massive allowance so charges only kick in for wonton waste
    -Reduction in USC
-Replacement of JobsBridge with a wage subsidy scheme for real jobs

…that would have stopped the bleeding, and people who voted for them in 2011 like myself would have come back. They had a golden opportunity with this since FF are coming up with ZERO new ideas atm. They blew it, they’ve done in 3 years what FF took 15 to do: got too cosy with power, and developed an inside the fish bowl establishment mentality.

Labour no Mep’s, not a hope in the up coming bye elections but according to Adam, Burton is the most popular minister we have.

She is not only a member of the ‘Labour’ party that made the minimum wage meaningless, she is the minister who oversaw becoming so.

Big companies get away with paying F all tax by abusing loop holes in the Irish system. Their profits multiply while people here have no jobs and the number of homeless is increasing. Those who have jobs are crippled financially by the tax system that increases at every opportunity and for a lot of people with homes, those houses are in negative equity.
    What’s wrong with this government??

Everyday waking up in this country would drive a person mad. This government makes mistake after mistake and pulls stroke and there is no consequence. We do nothing about it. We should be dragging Labour one by one out of the Dáil by the teeth in their heads to leave government, showing them the discontent of the majority and forcing change. But we let them away with everything time after time and their actions get worse and worse, and each time they are more flippant about it.

It’s a very very sad time to be Irish.

Makes no difference if Labour pull out off government they are finished as a” political party” so they will stay the course just like the failed green party …. The election clock is ticking.

why do we always have to come back to the bank debt we all knows it there. Let’s move on & get our ass in gear to fix it. How we are going to do that I don’t know but the idiots in gov only looking after their own ass is not helping, I didn’t spend when we had celtic tiger, didn’t get new car, bigger house, holidays, etc but i’m paying for it. My son wants a f/t job cant get one is stuck with a p/t job which has nothing to do with what he went to college for. The only reason the unemployment no are down is jobs /scam bridge, airports, boats, or anything that will get you out of this country. The gov dont give a dam about the tax payer like the average person except how they can take more money from us. If I knew what I could do believe me I would tell everyone except the clowns in gov. May be we should all club together & get one of these consultants the gov keep talking about to come up with some ideas how to fix this. As the idiots have no idea. Cant even get their cronies a job dealing with water.
