A CHRISTIAN CHURCH in Kildare town was the target of racist graffiti overnight, in an incident a local councillor says is the latest in a string of attacks.
Independent councillor Joanna Pender says that she was dropping her daughter to school this morning when she spotted the graffiti on the sign for the Divine Hope of Glory International Church, near Kildare Educate Together.
She told TheJournal.ie that she has been in contact with gardaí and Kildare County Council and the sign has since been removed.
“I have been talking to the pastor of the church and he says that something like this happens around once a month.
“He said that they recently had to ask the landlord to put cages on the windows of the church and that his own house around the corner had had eggs thrown at it.
“He said he’s been in Kildare 12 years and it’s getting worse.”
Other signs in the area were vandalised, but Pender says that this is by no means the viewpoint of the community.
“These people, whoever they are, are very much a minority in Kildare town.”
