THE HOTEL MAID who accused former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of attempted rape is suing a New York newspaper for libel after it claimed she was a prostitute.
The woman, 32, filed the suit against the New York Post earlier today over articles published at the beginning of July, in what her legal team described as a “desperate attempt to bolster its rapidly plunging sales”, Reuters reports. The Hotel Sofitel employee said that the newspaper knew or should have known that the articles were false before publication.
The case against Strauss-Kahn is reportedly on the verve of being dropped because of recent questions being raised about the credibility of the alleged victim.
The Post claimed that the woman, originally from Guniea, lied about being gang-raped in order to secure her application for asylum in the US; lied about the number of children she had in attempts to secure residency and tax benefits; and offered sexual favours to the hotel residents in exchange for money.
The suit said that the statements by the Post “are false, have subjected the plaintiff to humiliation, scorn and ridicule throughout the world by falsely portraying her as a prostitute or as a woman who trades her body for money and they constitute defamation and libel per se”.
