Aid agencies seek urgent help to counter Africa's worst drought in decades

Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are close to yet another famine, after their driest period in around 60 years.

HUMANITARIAN AID AGENCIES have issued urgent appeals for help in sending food to the Horn of Africa after the region experienced its worst droughts for around 60 years.

The driest period in decades in the region – which includes the vulnerable countries of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia – has coincided with violence in the latter country, leaving a level of malnutrition threatening a “human tragedy of unimaginable proportions”.

Such is the urgency of the situation that some children are dying while on their way to receive emergency food supplies from United Nations camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, the BBC quoted a UN spokeswoman as saying.

One camp in the northern Kenyan city of Dabaab, which was originally built to house a maximum of 90,000 people, is in danger of reaching a population of half a million, the Daily Telegraph added, as the following video from Medicins sans Frontieres testifies:

Half of children in Somalia, and over 30 per cent of children in Kenya, are facing serious malnourishment as a result of the extreme weather conditions.

Trócaire’s warned that the deteriorating situation could have “catastrophic consequences”: Maurice McQuillan said the current malnutrition rates were up to five times higher than the threshold that usually indicates an ‘emergency’.

Oxfam Ireland’s chief executive Jim Clarken added that the situation would also cause an economic crisis, as the sole source of income for many – farm animals – were also dying as a result of malnutrition.

“The world’s poorest people, who spend 80 per cent of their income on food, are the ones who will suffer,” Clarken said.

Donations to Trocaire can be made through its website, www.trocaire.org, or by phoning 1850 408 408 (RoI) or 0800 912 1200 (NI). Donations to Oxfam Ireland can be made through www.oxfamireland.org or by calling 1850 30 40 55 (RoI) or 0800 0 30 40 55 (NI). The Medecins sans Frontieres Somalia appeal page is at www.msf.ie/somalia-appeal. Go to www.goal.ie to find out how to donate there.

At the original 12 week wait he should have got it last week. He wasn’t even on their booking system for his next one. Thankfully she was so helpful has it for Mon.now. Also told me if I know of anyone else waiting get them to ring HSEas they’ve moved 2nd dose to 4 weeks not 6.

Give it to people working in retail & hospitality immediately. Most young people will have a college / summer job in one of those areas, give it to them and then you can start to backtrack on your plan and begin to open indoor dining and get the country open.

@C: i think the HSE rollout continues on their priority list but the pharmacy roll out is on first come first served.

I accept your point about vaccinating public facing and close working groups as a priority and ahead of those who want a vaccine to travel or just feel safe. I just cannot see how that could be applied to 700 independently operating pharmacies, some who will be busier than others some of whom may be a lot busier that others.

I also wonder how quick this will really happen as
to what the gap will be from contacting your local pharmacy to getting your shot. Hopefully a few days and the pharmacy supplies canbe topped up.

Now, if this works, we could have vaccinated many more before the 18th July and feed this and vaccine effectiveness into the number cruncher ..

The current by age system and the new first come first serve system for the pharmacies are the best way to get the maximum amount of jabs done.

This could literally only be done now because NIAC advice only updated on Monday. This leaves less people for vaccination centres to do in future and speeds up the whole process. We aren’t being skipped. A lot of people have their first jab. It will happen soon while younger people speed up the overall vaccination process by going to pharmacies.

@Keith Brady: because we are already registered on the portal. Could you imagine the amount of double bookings and chaos that could cause? It’s not as if we are in the over 60s or 70s category. We are at very similar levels of risk from COVID to 18-34 year olds. This makes total sense from an operational point of view as it gets hopefully a couple of hundred thousand people vaccinated earlier getting us back to normal earlier.

Anyway, bigger picture and all that jazz.

People my age who refused the first dose are the lucky ones as they were not put to the back of the queue as we were told & have since been given 2 doses of a better vaccine…..we were bullied because of over supply of Astra!!!

@Deborah Connolly: that’s not accurate, Public Health England published data on this recently, their real world experience from 10s of millions of doses of AstraZeneca having being administered, is AZ has 92% efficacy in preventing hospitalisations with the Delta Variant. This occurs when BOTH doses have been administered.

Same applies for Pfizer and Moderna, in that maximum efficacy requires both doses.

To put into context influenza vaccines have a typical efficacy of 50-60%

@Alan Byrne: that is my attitude yes. Been getting screwed over the last year and a half.. worked all through the pandemic, done what I was asked tol. Under the original vaccination system I would have been one of first after doctor and nurses etc were vaccinated to get vaccinated suddenly we switched to an age based vaccination system. I waited for my age group to come up. When it did I registered straight away and 2 weeks later still nothing. Now I’ll have to wait longer again because the government f’ed up the reopening and will now vaccinate 18-34 in pharmacies while the 35-40 age group is left waiting. So yes I’m annoyed after I’ve done everything I was asked and once again I’m left waiting to get back to a normal but get screwed over again by the system.

Others I know who were high risk for more than one reason were contacted more than once as both had put them forward for vaccination

It does seem strange to me that high risk are still waiting for a first dose. Must not have been put forward by anyone but I did hear of some GPs being selective juggling supply and demand – so I agree that people in high risk still waiting need to contact their GP and the HSE and whoever monitors their illness.

I know that they are working their way through the group that were waiting the 12 weeks, and that includes health care workers and not just you. So the advice to contact the HSE about the second shot Is good. @Ashling Fenton: does it really matter? What matters is getting vaccines to as many people as possible, especially the group with the highest transmissions.

Time to stop this c.ap with delta variant.
J@J said that it’s single-shot vaccine neutralises the fast-spreading Delta variant.
Just give that vaccine to anybody willing to take.

Great news but why didn’t they integrate with the portal whereby the nearest pharmacy to you or in your general area gives you an appointment? There’ll be people ringing all 750 pharmacies on Monday

Exactly. For example, I usually log into McCabe’s Swiftqueue. Today they’re only offering flu jabs. Nothing about an option to book an appointment for a Covid vaccine. Maybe by Monday it will be all set up with the extra option. If so, fantastic, it would be straightforward.

I doubt if the logistics are set up properly for this? Why? I had my second jab yesterday and we (about 20 people) were huddled together (had been distancing) whilst the security questions were being shouted out to us. And then told to shout out our replies. (Hint: the answer is “no” to all questions). Treated like kids we were. Anyway, does anyone know if the HSE has an alternative location planned during the seven days of the Galway Races? (It’s currently at the racecourse).

I currently have the covid aged 38 and can’t register for a vaccine for at least 6 weeks, find this pharmacy thing unfair I would love to be able to walk in and get the vaccine there rather than heading to the helix.

@marian doherty: You know you’re better off with actual immunity from the covid you have than a vaccine right?

@marian doherty: how is it unfair? When you have recovered you can also register to have your vaccine in a pharmacy just like everyone else in the group it applies to. People need to cop on and stop being so bitter that someone else might be vaccinated before them. The important thing is getting as many people vaccinated as possible.

@Sam Harms: sorry just saw it’s 18-34 for pharmacies, I saw somewhere this morning it was older groups as well. But point still stands. You will be covered by natural antibodies for much longer than it will take you to get your vaccine.

@Sam Harms: Actually it’s the combination of vaccine plus natural antibodies that gives you souped your immunity . If you have had Covid and one shot of Pfizer for example you immunity response is 1000 times better against variants than nothing at all. Actually studies out there to prove this . But waiting 6 weeks after having Covid to get vaccinated means you will still be protected from severe disease and death from another variant while you are waiting for the vaccine .

Seriously, the amount of miserable a**holes commenting is terrible. Everyone over 35 can register to get the vaccine via the HSE. Young people had their school year/college year ruined and haven’t been able to do most thing you enjoyed in your youth! Let them get vaccinated. It helps everyone!
