Open Thread: What was your 'coming out' experience like?

Share your stories.

Lgbt HeartToHeart / YouTube

TODAY MARKS NATIONAL Coming Out Day, an initiative launched around the world to help people be open about their sexuality.

The campaign has been supported in Ireland by a number of well-known faces, including TDs and Senators, television presenters and drag queen Panti, aka Rory O’Neill.

The video above was produced to show what advice people would give to their younger selves if they had a chance for a heart to heart, giving themselves advice on how to handle the process of ‘coming out’ and talking about what they could have done differently.

It features Stella Poole, a 42-year-old transgender person who was once married and came out to her former wife at the age of 39; Paul Knox, a 29-year-old primary school teacher from Kilkenny who has been ‘out’ for seven years; Barbara McCullagh, 46, who came out to friends aged 15 and to her parents at the age of 21; Jack Robertson, 28 from Dublin, who has been open about his sexuality with his friends since he was 20; Vincent O’Toole from Tallaght who has been out since the age of 18 and Kirsty Park, 26 from Drogheda, who came out aged 21.

As part of the day, the LGBT Helpline is asking members of the public to share their stories on social media.

And we’d also love to hear about your experiences. Share your stories in the comments section below.

Oh come on, seriously. After a pretty grueling campaign are they not entitled to a day off. They probably haven’t properly spent time with their children in weeks. And both were there for most of the day yesterday.

After a very nasty campaign, is the media now so cruel that it wants to see all the losing candidates paraded in front of them again today, after weeks of non stop probing and questioning and mud raking? Are they not allowed to recover from their sense of personal disappointment in private?

@ryan, not having a go at you again, but I don’t agree that it was a nasty campaign. Most of the controversies were generated by legitimate questions e.g. Norris letters, Davis board decisions, Dana citizenship,
Mc Guinness and the RA, SG and FF. I think some of the candidates expected a walk in the (Phoenix) park. It’s the top job, I expect to hear some tough questions. Politicians calling stuff negative is just spin, to try and ignore difficult questions.

It wasn’t a nasty campaign for Gay. No one in the media asked him about his refusal to publish expenses from Europe. His refusal to publish the Galton report in to MEP’s fraudulent expenses. These were major issues that the media refused to bring up.

Gay and FG decided to start this campaign off on a very poisonous note, re McGuinness and Mary Davis. Martin turned up, shook hands with Kenny and sang MDH’s praises.

Gay and FF did this to themselves and in the process they nearly landed us with a FF gom, who would turned the Aras in to a joke with financial investigations hanging over him. They also picked an exceptional poor candidate in DubW. No offence to Loftus but seriously people, were ye deliberately trying to queer the pitch the help FF’s David McGuinness. It seems so. FG don’t do elections because they do not listen to the people. Time to start listening.

I wonder if people will be willing to put themselves through an ordeal like this again when the presidential election time comes around again in seven years time? Not easy on those who lost. They put a lot into their campaigns and went through a great deal of personal criticism. Someone would have to be a strong character not to crumble under the intense media scrutiny. They are only human after all.

sure they have seen very little of their families in recent times so spent the day with them. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to turn up for the last event but really it’s Michael D ‘s night and what harm?

Davis spent today looking for a few new quangos in order to fill the gap in her finances now she won’t be getting another wad from the tax payers and Gay, well he was busy writing letters to America, there’s still plenty of right wing bigoted religious nutjobs who don’t like abortion and who are in need of his clemency letters and anyway he has his cosy number in Brussels to fall back on, even better pickings to be had on the EU gravy train than hanging around in the phoenix park! At least the Fianna FAILure candidate showed up and said congrats although don’t be surprised if the state doesn’t receive an invoice for his attendance before the week’s out. McGuinness can go back to norn iron and be a hero again and poor oul Norris can always head off for a stint on a kibbutz as for Dana, well it appears the good sky fairy was busy this week and didn’t work his magic to get her into the park but hey, at least she can go back to her home in America and make more of her fairy music for the the swathes of ‘god fearin’ bible thumping gobshites who inhabit that great land and who like nothing more than a pious little biddy singing all about family luv, jezus and all things gawd! Well done to Michael D, el presidente a la republica de banana!

@ Frank. You have to concentrate. The question was where were Davis and Mitchell. We know where mcguinness was. He was on the platform congratulating our new president Michael D. And he thanked the gardaí as well. That small gesture should not be ignored. It’s high time for a bit of reconciliation on all sides. Peace cannot be sustained with so much bitterness from us in the 26 counties.
