SuperValu ‘monitoring the situation’ as Bulmer pulls News of the World ads

The number of companies which have announced they are pulling their advertising from the newspaper is growing.

Updated at 22:00

SUPERVALU HAS joined the growing number of companies considering their “advertising options” over the News of the World phone hacking allegations.

In a statement to TheJournal.ie, the supermarket company said it was “monitoring the situation”.

Bulmers has pulled its adverts from future editions of the News of the World following the revelations about phone hacking at the newspaper. The company had a number of scheduled ads with the newspaper.

A spokesperson from the cider company’s Irish office told TheJournal.ie earlier today that it won’t be advertising “pending the outcome of all investigations”, but has decided not to publish any adverts in the News of the World with immediate affect.

Aldi has also announced that it will not be advertising with the newspaper, according to the Guardian.

The company said it is “reviewing its advertising in the Irish edition” and is not planning any future adverts in the newspaper pending the outcomes of the external investigations.

RTE reports that Aer Lingus is “actively considering” whether to place any more ads in the newspaper.

The families of murdered children Milly Dowler, Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells, as well as the families of the 7/7 London bombings victims have been caught up in the widening investigation into alleged phone hacking by the News of the World.

The list of companies which have confirmed they are pulling their advertising from the newspaper now includes: Ford, Vauxhall, NatWest, Halifax, Mitsubishi and Virgin Holidays.

Its starting to look like the NOTW could collapse. That should be a lesson for the hacks working for other rags.

Some of these companies are getting more publicity from pulling their adds than they do from placing the adds in this rag in the first place.

Please note they are only “considering” withdrawing their advertising. Seems to me that they are trying to buy time to gauge public opinion. If these advertisers had any morals or liatharoidi they would make an immediate decision!

I only wish that the companies were doing from an ethical position. Rather, I feel it to protect themselves commercially that these companies are taking action. It should be noted that a few heads rolling in Wapping will not be sufficient to change the culture in the entire UK tabloid world. All of the other tabloids are strangely muted on the subject, leading me to suspect that they all have something to hide.

Never mind the advertisers, it’s the people who buy that rag who ought to stop buying it. It’s tabloid junk & to reach that low to get a story. Disgusting.

Well said Richard. But look at the Liverpudlians response to the Sun after Hillsboro. Now picture that on a national scale. We can only hope. Can’t even remember the last time I picked up that fish n chip wrapper. But, still, fair play to those who pulled their ads. Every bit helps. Murdoch must be feeling the pressure with the bskyb bid ongoing for sure

Would they really collapse that quickly? Murdoch is a cantankerous aul fecker and I can see him pumping money into a loss making title until all the criticism dies down. And just so he can show how big he really is.

Oddly there’s no coverage of how the hacking takes place and if and where it is happening this side of the pond.

When a story like this takes place, usually there’s a side bar explaining how it’s done and how to protect yourself. Very little of it is done by some high tech wizardry. There’s been zip about this in the media coverage.

Phone hacking is really the sale of personal data and there should be a closer look to see at what level is it happening here if at all.

Brian, I heard today that the Milly Dowling incident happened because the default PIN on the voicemail of her phone was still on, therefore you dial into the voicemail, try your luck with, say, 1234, then you would have access. Things have moved on from then, I believe, but in 2002 this was the norm

Remember the appalling allegations made by Irish newspapers against Liam Lawlor within hours of his death? I havn’t noticed too much contrition on the part of the guilty editors and I’ll take any breast-beating by any of them or their papers on this issue with a pinch of salt.

Retractions and apologies were printed on the liam lawlor thing if I remember correctly. There was no excuse for that behaviour either, regardless of the man’s shameful carry on preceeding his death. Sadly, the media panders to sensational news at the behest of angry mob audiences. The recent trial of the child killer mum in florida is a perfect case in point. The publics lust for her blood was scary. Ironically, she got off with all charges pertaining to the child’s death but was found guilty of lying to investigators. She will need round the clock protection in prison because it was such a high profile case. There were fights in the queues outside the court house among the public scrambling for seats in the public gallery. Some people even admitted dropping their children off at disneyworld in orlando so they could join the queue. Harks back to the days of public hangings. Human beings can be a scary lot sometimes.
