€80 million ... That's how much could be raised by hiring 100 extra tax staff

A fully trained auditor can bring in €800,000, according to Finance Minister Michael Noonan.

THE FINANCE MINISTER’S asked to weigh in on a range of hypothetical scenarios each week — as TDs send in written questions to be answered by his Department.

Tommy Broughan, the former Labour TD, raised an interesting query this week…

How much could be raised for the Exchequer, if the Revenue Commissioners hired an extra 100 staff?

According to Michael Noonan…

“[...] it is estimated that increasing these resources by an additional 100 would cost an estimated €5.2m per annum with an additional exchequer yield of €80m.

The additional yield was based on an estimate that each additional fully trained auditor has the capacity to bring in an average of €800,000 in audit yield.

However, he notes….

The investment in the training and development of a Revenue Auditor can take up to three years, depending on previous relevant experience. Therefore the full additional yield for the Exchequer would not be available immediately.

    A contradiction in terms Patrick!
Your comment highlights what’s wrong with the electorate in this country, they don’t want to pay for anything and yet demand top class public services. Time to grow up.

John Byrne Patrick’s definition of taxation is 100% correct. Your money is taken forcefully from you by government. He stated a fact didn’t make any comment about public services. If more Irish people understood the nature of government and taxation perhaps they would demand better bang for their buck in taxes raised.

I sometimes smile when people get all haughty sputtering “I’m a Tax Payer!” Like it confers some kind of entitlement upon them. The sad reality of taxes is that the world over they are taken from us involuntarily and that itself shows how un-entitled we are.

John that would be the ideal system, but we don’t trust the government and the government doesn’t trust the people, so we have a situation where we have to support it by paying taxes or else incarceration – kind of the most forceful argument you can make. This is not an ideal situation, but as it worked for a couple of hundred years, it has been the preferred model of control and funding.

The only countries that don’t pay taxes are ones that don’t need the people at all.

I’m with you John. Too many people don’t really understand the basics of society. Tax is required for public services and infrastructure. The water charges have only highlighted the level of self-entitlement in this country. It’s quite disgusting to be honest.

John very broad statement and totally unfair, the general public pay taxes and expect the services to be run correctly, also not pay for feck ups like the banks, our tax monies are abused with the way the government use it, also we don’t expect to pay for anything three times over,

The suggestion of taxation being legalised theft is wrong. It’s as if the government are taking people’s money and giving nothing in return (as if we’re living in Sherwood Forrest). Though, I pay tax….. I can do so because I got a primary, secondary and third level education for ‘free’. I pay tax…. I can do so because I use the motorways in this country to conduct my business and earn revenue for my company. I pay tax…. I can do so because the company paying my salary was supported by Enterprise Ireland. The comfort I have and the life I live is very much supported by the services provided by this government, and previous governments, due to the tax revenue generated by this country’s people.

By that logic, they should employ 100,000 and bring in €80b. Jobs for everyone, and no national debt!

I’ve seen what the see revenue “experts” can do to retired and the self employed people who have been tax compliant all their lives, often taking away their life savings due to dubious interpretations while keeping the politically friendly loopholes open.

The truth is to get rid of all these fancy accounting scams from the legislation and you won’t need experts to police them.

I’d gladly pay for these 80 staff provided they can be got rid of if they are useless or don’t meet these targets……
What would of course happen here is that we’d employ 80 institutionalised civil servants or FG supporters and pay them a fortune with no accountability…..
