Gardaí continue to question man after children injured in petrol bomb attack

The attack took place after 9pm last night.

Updated 7.22pm

A MAN IN his 20s is still in custody this evening after being arrested last night in relation to a petrol bomb attack that injured a one-year-old baby.

A second man is reported to have been seen fleeing this scene, however a garda spokesperson said this evening that no other arrests have yet been made.

An 11-year-old girl who was injured in the attack underwent surgery in Cork University Hospital earlier today, her aunt Danielle Halligan told RTÉ News.

Speaking about the attack, Halligan said:

[The attacker/s] knew what they were doing when they threw the thing through the window. They knew what they were coming here to do, because they know there’s nothing but children here in my mother’s house.

At about 9.20pm last night, a petrol bomb was thrown into a home in Ardmore Park, Ballybeg in Waterford, injuring three children.

The children were sitting on the sofa at the time when the device came through the front window.

The grandmother managed to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher.

The children were rushed to University Hospital Waterford.

Gardaí said two of the children were “seriously injured”, but their condition is not said to be life-threatening.

The 23-year old-man is being detained at Waterford Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.

Actually, there was a localised tremor that is understood to have caused the cave-in at the tunnel: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000fp74#summary

It’s is possible this was Induced Seismicity, caused by mining activity. Induced Seismicity is relatively common, it can happen when human activity causes weight on the Earth’s crust to change, it usually happens when new Dam are built and water in the reservoir presses down on the crust. The Rudna mine shifted 300 million tons or ore since mining began in 1974.

Looks like I was right, just found this -

A SEARCH FOR SEQUENCES OF MINING-INDUCED SEISMIC EVENTS AT THE RUDNA COPPER MINE IN POLAND – Grzegorz KWIATEK

The largest earthquakes caused by the mine before this mag 4.6 event, were Mag 4.1 and 4.2.
