Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly speaking to the media outside Leinster House today. Christina Finn/TheJournal.ie

Alan Kelly doesn't think Irish Water should pay any bonuses to staff

Alan Kelly said the new board will address the bonus culture at Irish water as a matter of priority.

THE MINISTER FOR the Environment Alan Kelly says he does not want any bonuses paid at Irish Water.

Speaking today outside Leinster House, Kelly said that he wanted to make his position quite clear on the matter of bonuses being paid, stating:

“I don’t believe in it, I don’t believe it should happen.”

Priority

The board of Ervia and the board of Irish Water will merge to create a new board and he said he expected the new board to deal with the issue of bonuses “as a priority”.

“There is a lot of details around this, there is contracts, there is details to be worked out, there is no way as a minister I am going to get into that detail, but I will be telling the new board that I want that issue dealt with as a matter of priority,” he said.

The minister then put a call out for anyone that felt they could play a role on the new board, stating: “We need people for the board of Ervia. We need people with experience in this area, anyone who feels they have that, I would ask them to put their names forward”.

Data breaches

When asked by TheJournal.ie if he thought the public had any confidence in the organisation following data breaches taking place with people’s banking details being sent to their landlord, he said that peoples personal data has to be protected.

That is absolutely fundamental. A number of errors do occur and you have to accept that that is a possibility, but quite frankly, they shouldn’t.

Any breaches that have happened or have accidentally happened where customers information has been given to people when it shouldn’t have is simply unacceptable.

I made that quite clear today and I don’t expect that to be an issue that will continue to happen.

He said that those customers who did have their banking details passed on to their landlords have been dealt with, stating that senior level management at Irish Water have been in touch with the customers, and he welcomed that.

The government leak out the word bonuses and how much they will get to get everyone talking about that. Then the government step in to stop it, make them look like the good guys. Thinking that we will accept Irish water with no bonuses paid. P iss off. Scrap the lot. Jokers.

This is not the real issue. Water tax is the issue we should not get caught up in who gets bonuses etc.
If they want to introduce metered water charges they need to take 2% of VAT and 5% off motor tax first. Also they need to insure it never gets privatised and we pay no more than the average per m3 rate in the EU.

Agree with reducing taxes elsewhere to cover it. Bizarrely, the government hasn’t tried to spin it that way! In fact they could have emphasised that the recent income tax reductions and social welfare increase were the being funded by water charges.

    From our local newspaper today.

“LABOUR councillor Joe Leddin, Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan’s parliamentary assistant, is to march in protest against Irish Water on Saturday.

The former general election candidate’s action is likely to cause embarrassment to Ms O’Sullivan, only recently appointed to a full ministry.

And in a day of high drama, the leader of Limerick City and County Council Kevin Sheahan has also confirmed he will take part in the action, set to get under way at 2pm outside City Hall this Saturday.”

He can polish it up as much as he likes, if the vast number of Irish people stick together and refuse to pay double taxation for their water, it will show our “masters” in the Dail that they were elected by the people of this country and not the troika. its our small population the will instigate there demise and evict them from their ivory towers. this coalition have failed the people of our country in many ways, water conservation is a total red herring , its privatisation in the long run for them and there masters from Europe.
