MICROSOFT HAS CONFIRMED it’s phasing out the Nokia mobile phone brand, sending everyone in Ireland of a certain vintage into a fit of nostalgia.
The American IT giant bought the 143-year-old Finnish company’s mobile phone division back in April, and will now brand its smartphones exclusively with “Lumia”, instead, according to The Verge.
Nokia France announced on Monday that it was “about to become ‘Microsoft Lumia’”, confirming rumours of a major rebranding.
Microsoft then told The Verge yesterday that that brand transition would be rolled out throughout the world in the coming weeks.
Nokia will now focus more on mapping and networking infrastructure.
A thoroughly scientific poll at TheJournal.ie this morning found that every last one of us had owned a Nokia mobile at one time or another, and for many, it was their first.
So let’s take a walk through the mists of time, past the advent of smartphones, beyond the Y2K bug, and through the evolution of the Nokia mobile phone (1987-2014).

Governments come and go but the civil service is for life
They can’t think outside the box, hire someone outside the Country and shake up this rotten barrel of apples? Where are all the reforms, we were promised and new ways of doing business?
Did u ever think that they couldnt get anyone to take the job.? The dpt of finance and d central bank r losing people hand over fist to d private sector. I betcha mr moran wont be long in his job b4 he is headhunted as well. The job these people have achieved in irl over the past 5 years makes them highly valued to make private corporations.

That statement is true but the irony is that each new Government Minister, on appointment to office, appoint their very own highly paid advisors to carry out work that competent senior career civil servants are already well paid to do.
Far from a stereotypical Civil Service here in Ireland, that was portrayed in the “Yes Minister” TV series all those years ago.
In UK, CC is perceived as permanent government where department heads steers its Ministers.
Not the case in Ireland, seemingly; it’s in fact the opposite – the mandarins do what the are told and must toe the party-in-power line.
This unquestioning obedience, as former DOF official, Mr Robert Pye, once described it, is the very reason this latest Moran got top post there.
Save pair of hands and all of that!
The person who should have been granted the DOF promotion was the prescient Ms Marie Mackle, who was shouted down and bullied in 2005 when she tried to raise concerns about the lunatic fiscal / monetary policies being pursued by FF / GREEN Gov, which ultimately destroyed our country’s finances.
Hopefully all related detail will emerge from upcoming banking inquiry.

What’s the difference between saying only one name will be brought to cabinet and we cannot confirm the name of the sole candidate? You know, to those lay-people clearly too stupid to understand the lingo.
Question is what roles has he held over the past 15 years. What influence had he in the DoF’s less than successful period.

Why not from private sector as most senior civil servants are rubbish….Health, justice, previous finance. But I could be wrong with this guy

This is the guy who said there would be a soft landing in the property sector and then a bust. Wrong man for the job. Should be an outside appointment as the laat thing we need is more stupid civil servants running things. .
Isn’t that the same guy who promised a “soft landing”? We are doomed again.
As long as he isn’t a brother of the previous incumbent or that Con Moran ,Anglo trial, then let’s give him a chance.

the reality is when they went to the private sector, John Moran stayed for less than a year . The smell of real money was too strong. Much as people knock the long-term civil servant, there aren’t too many others altruistic enough to take the job. Unless it’s vocational why would you take it. 1,033 AIB bankers are paid similar or more to him for less accountability and negative exposure.
