Fingal County Council considering installing lights in park where woman was assaulted

“All councillors are in unison of the importance that the green gets used by families and individuals.”

FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL is considering installing lights in a Castleknock park after a woman was assaulted there at the weekend.

The female, who is in her late 30s, was threatened and assaulted by a lone male at around 7.30am on Saturday.

Local councillor Jack Chambers contacted the council’s director of operations on Monday morning to see if the installation of lights could be included in the council’s schedule of works for 2015.

I wasn’t going to wait when it’s such an important issue.

Chambers said that “many families are scared and people are anxious” since the incident on Saturday.

The Fianna Fáil councillor noted that two local families made a complaint to gardaí on Monday when they saw a person using drugs in the park in the middle of the afternoon.

He said that the two recent incidents should act as an indicator to the Government that increasing the number of gardaí in local communities “should be paramount”.

Chambers said he was optimistic that lights would be installed, noting that the idea had cross-party support .

All councillors are in unison of the importance that the green gets used by families and individuals.

The schedule of works for the park, which also includes general upkeep, will be decided on in January.

They would probably need to install cameras so that the lights won’t get vandalized.

I think CCTV or dummy CCTV. With lots of signs saying that there is CCTV in the area.

Typical lazy council “ah sure we’ll make a decision on it in January” could be months after that , the fact somebody was attacked should be enough to act on it immediately

Its probably not laziness as such. Most local authorities would have used up their measly annual budget at this stage of the year and any new works would cause over budget problems….which the public also complain about. Hence they decide in jan when a new budget is available.

There should be lights but walking in an unlit park in the dark at 7.30 isn’t safe. People need to think more about personal safety and their actions. Take a more safe route if you want to go for a walk alone. Or bring a large dog.

So 7.30 in the morning isn’t safe. Is 7.30 in the evening safe in ur esteemed opinion? Or how about 1.30 in the morning? Or how about instead of blaming/changing victims behaviour you actually focus on blaming/changing perpetrator behaviour.
