Two-year-old girl dies of Ebola in Mali's first case

The girl had recently returned to Mali from neighbouring Guinea.

Updated 06.45am

A TWO-YEAR-old girl died of Ebola in Mali today, in the first case of the disease in the west African nation.

The girl had recently returned to Mali from neighbouring Guinea, one of the countries most affected by an epidemic that has killed nearly 4,900 people.

The toddler died while being treated at a hospital in the western city of Kayes today, according to a statement from the Health Ministry read out on television.

This is the first Ebola case in Mali and may expand to many more.

Borders

The case highlights how quickly the virus can hop borders and even oceans, just as questions are being asked about what precautions health care workers who treat Ebola patients should take when they return home from the hot zone.

Doctors Without Borders insisted today, after one of its doctors who worked in Guinea came down with Ebola in New York, that quarantines of returning health workers are not necessary when they do not show symptoms of the disease.

In the Mali case, however, the girl was visibly sick, WHO said, and an initial investigation has identified 43 people, including 10 health workers, she came into close contact with who are being monitored for symptoms and held in isolation. The child was confirmed to have Ebola on Thursday.

“The child’s symptomatic state during the bus journey is especially concerning, as it presented multiple opportunities for exposures — including high-risk exposures — involving many people,” the agency said in a statement.

The girl first went to a clinic in Mali on Monday and she was initially treated for typhoid, which she tested positive for. When she did not improve, she was tested for Ebola.

Unnecessary comment Onion. A two year old has died what was probably a very traumatic and frightening death.
I’m not excluding my sympathy for this lone toddler – it’s just not many individual cases have been reported on.

May she Rest Peacefully now, and let’s hope they can limit the threat to others.

I’m not belittling the death of the toddler but to be so foolish as to bring a child who is already showing symtoms of a viral infection that is ravaging a country she has just visited and putting her on a bus full of people is beyond reason!

I sympathise with the toddlers family but their actions have placed countless others at risk and needlessly introduced it into a region that was not previously affected.

Did your other comment with your assumptions get deleted? Anyway, you assumed wrong, that’s not what I meant. Also, I don’t support Sinn féin nor have I followed the story you were referring to so not really in a position to reply. Unless of course I follow your lead and make some unfounded assumptions! But I’ll leave that kind of nonsense to you and Frank.

John Clancy.. I bet you are another condecending website shill working for the US government, how much are you paid to troll?

Speaking of medication, A liberian Scientist claims that the US Government is responsible for this current strain of Ebola.

“The US Department of Defense (DoD) is funding Ebola trials on humans, trials which started just weeks before the Ebola outbreak in Guinea and Sierra Leone. The reports continue and state that the DoD gave a contract worth $140 million dollars to Tekmira, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, to conduct Ebola research. This research work involved injecting and infusing healthy humans with the deadly Ebola virus. Hence, the DoD is listed as a collaborator in a “First in Human” Ebola clinical trial (NCT02041715, which started in January 2014 shortly before an Ebola epidemic was declared in West Africa in March.”

Unless the person is displaying symptoms and said person(s) sitting on the bus/plane are coming in direct contact with the infected persons bodily fluids there won’t be an issue.

Honestly Frank you can continue to respond to your own posts with links to the same conspiracy theories over and over again but they are nothing more than the scribblings of those holed up in bunkers wearing tin foil hats and rambling about the New World Order as if it’s all some sort of Truman Show-esque prank that the world is playing on them.

Did Obama tell you that too?

Someone could easily develop the symptoms during the course of a 10 hour flight from an effected hot spot area.

The opinion of a journalist and news paper headlines are hardly evidence. Nor is the fact that the US has lied on previous occasions. Where are the peer reviewed articles in medical journals to back up your outragious claims? Oh wait, there are none. There’s no point arguing, you’ve no interest in the truth. You decide the US is guilty of something first then trawl the internet for crap to back it up. The really sickening thing is that there is plenty of easily verifiable and, in fact, openly admitted wrong doing carried out by the US on a daily basis which you choose to ignore in favour of more outlandish and exciting fiction. You might think you’re some open minded rebel but your ignorance is astounding and you serve the US more then any right wing neocon shill could ever hope to.

Gearóid Ó Murchadha The US Authorities have a hell of a lot to blame on this Ebola crisis, from the fear mongering disinformation and down right lies by the President himself on the matter “You cannot catch Ebola on a bus. its not air borne etc”

I have posted links on several occasions from official sources, one from the CDC on guidelines for a level-4 biohazard infection of which Ebola is. The US Government cannot even advise the public from its own guidelines FFS.

The Entry of Ebola into the US has all the hallmarks of a planned happening. More information is available that suggests the the government had advance information that Ebola was coming to the US and that the government expects a much larger outbreak of the disease in the US than it admits. I myself recon that this was prepared going back as far as 7 years ago with the publicity of FEMA camps equipped with seal able caskets. Its no longer a subject for the tin foil hat brigade..

We must also keep in mind that Washington is evil to the core and has been murdering innocent people in seven countries for thirteen years entirely based entirely on lies. Syria is its next conquest but no doubt the US authorities will use this latest Ebola scare to draw away the mainstream media attention from the middle east while they weaken the Syrian Government.

Ebola is not airborne so how’s that a lie? As for its entry into the US, that guy lied going in, no conspiracy there. As for the competence of US authorities, not gonna argue with you there, plenty of examples of the lack thereof.
