Rise in construction causing rats to come up from sewers and drains

Heard any scratching noises recently? Just saying.

RATS ARE BEING disrupted from sewers and drains as construction picks up.

That’s according to Rentokil – who describe its increase in callouts as “back to Celtic Tiger levels as houses and offices begin to be built again.”

Rats carry common diseases like Salmonella, Weil’s disease, E.coli and TB. They also carry fleas, mites and ticks and can cause acute allergic reactions.

Dr Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager at Rentokil says, “Rodents like warmth, quiet, and a source of food”.

Tips to keep the rats out

Moore has this advice for anyone concerned about rats:

  • Seal any holes and fit bristle strip around doors – (young rats can get through holes of less than 1cm.)
  • Make sure to use steel, wool or caulk. (Wood, plastic or expanding foam is useless as they will gnaw through it.)
  • Don’t attract mice and rats with food – where possible store food in glass or metal containers and regularly clean under cookers, fridges and cupboards.
  • Keep household refuse in closed bins and do not put meat or food cooked in oils into compost bins or heaps.
  • Ensure that all pipe-work is in good order – rats can come up from sewers through broken pipes.
  • Keep clutter to a minimum to reduce the options for nesting sites and remember that dirty, messy areas can attract pests.

How do I know if they’ve sneaked in?

If you think you already have a rodent problem, look out for the following signs:

  • Scratching noises in walls, attics or under the floor as mice and rats scurry around.
  • Droppings – rats leave dark, tapered droppings about 10-14mm long. Mice leave small, dark droppings particularly along walls, in cupboards or under sinks.
  • Distinctive smell – both mice and rats leave an ammonia-like smell that will be particularly strong in enclosed areas such as under cupboards.
  • Damage – mice and rats have teeth that grow continuously and they gnaw on a variety of household objects to keep them trim. (Rodents can even cause fires by chewing through cables.)
  • Ripped food packaging – rodents will tear open food which may leave teeth marks.
  • Nests – rats and mice build nests in warm, hidden places using shredded material such as newspaper and fabrics.

If this sounds familiar you can put some plain flour along the edge of the floor by the walls or on surfaces close to where you think the nest might be.

You’ll notice tracks in the powder within a few days if the nest is close – lovely.

I watched a documentary years ago when I was a kid and it was about rats coming up drains & up the toilet. I still have the image in my head & I’m always cautious when I lift the toilet lid. Having said that, I have absolutely no clue what I’d do if I ever lifted the lid to see a rat looking back at me. I fully believe I’d have a heart attack on the spot.

We get mice every winter, blocked up all known entrances but the little buggers still manage to get in. TIP.. Always use the old-school wooden traps with some bacon fat, just melt the bacon with a lighter just before setting, gets them everytime! All these new pre-baited traps and glue traps are useless and expensive.

Used the traps out of the 2euro shop that catches them alive. Captured five of them and released them back into the wild.

We had a robin in the kitchen the other morning. Think he came in to eat some cat food, played dead when the cat found him and flew back out when she wasn’t looking.

Stop releasing them, you’ve most likely released the same mouse 10 times. If you use a trap which kills the mouse it will likely be the end of your troubles.

@sean.. They don’t work Sean, we tried them. We live in a semi dethatched and I reckon they coming in from next door through the attic. It seems the eastern Europeans who live next door don’t believe in paying for bin collection so they burn their rubbish in a steel bin out the back garden, I’m guessing they also use a composite heap for their food waste, because we also seem to get lots and lots of flies especially in summer. We have reported this to the county council but still no action.

I was going to say that also. We stock them in the shop I work in and they’re not worth a damn. Even our supplier said it. Where I live there is young lads who drink behind my house and have obviously driven them out of they’re nest because we’ve been fighting them all summer. Not to mention the people in my estate who decide to dump there dinner left overs on the green across the road. Disgusting. Ours got so bad if looked into finding someone who had a hunting ferret. Now that’s a rat killer

There are domestic and wild rats. The domestic rats are the ones that live in close proximity to us, they are smaller completely clean and do not carry diseases.

The wild rat on the other hand is much larger, lives in the wild and is therefore prone to picking up ticks and bugs. It was the ticks and fleas on the wild rat which carried the back death plague across Europe.
