A PROTEST AGAINST racism was held in Waterford today following weekend demonstrations that saw three Roma families evacuated from a house in the area.

More than 200 people gathered on Manor Street in the city over the weekend after a rally was organised on Facebook against a spate of crimes in the area.

The protest turned ugly, with windows smashed and families forced to flee.

The European Network Against Racism Ireland condemned the weekend’s violence and intimidation.

Waterford Against Racism organised the protest in John Roberts Square in the city against the events that took place over the weekend.

Speaking on RTÉ Nine News many who attended the protest today said they did so to voice their concerns and speak out against racism in the city.

The Minister of State Aodhán Ó Ríordáin today hosted a discussion on how to legislate to deal with hate crime in Ireland.
