Frozen, Morning Ireland, and the C word: The week in numbers

Plus: How many new cars have been sold in Ireland so far this year?

EVERY WEEK, TheJournal.ie offers a selection of statistics and numerical nuggets to help you digest the week that has just passed.

107,000,000: The number of spiders found in an abandoned water treatment plant in the US. This works out as a density of 35,176 spiders per m³. Shudder.

7.5 million: The number of people in the Catalonia region of Spain. A symbolic independence vote which has been banned by the Spanish government will go ahead tomorrow.

450,000+: The number of views (so far) of a video showing IDA boss Martin Shanahan answering bizarre questions about Ireland from a presenter on CNBC.

95,217: The number of new cars sold in Ireland so far this year – the first time since 2009 that the figure has broken 95,000.

€1,463: The amount that the average household will spend on Christmas this year – at least, according to one survey.

400+: The number of cases of mumps in Ireland so far this year – more than double the number of cases last year.

83: The percentage of rail journeys in Ireland which take place in the Greater Dublin Area, according to the NTA’s annual rail census.

54: The number of requests the Irish government made for Facebook to hand over information in the first six months of this year – an increase of 20 on last year.

44: The percentage of people in Ireland with private health insurance. Health Minister Leo Varadkar has announced new measures to push young people to take out cover.

37: The number of years ago that Brendan Megraw went missing. The body of the 23-year-old, who was ‘disappeared’ by the IRA, has been found in a Meath bog.

30: The age that RTE Radio One’s Morning Ireland turned on Wednesday.

8: The number of years since the Republican Party has had control of both houses of Congress in the US. The GOP won both the House and the Senate in midterm elections this week.

2: The maximum number of toys from the film Frozen that people are allowed to buy at the Disney store in Dublin in the run-up to Christmas.
