300 jobs up for grabs in Amazon Dublin - so many it had to expand its offices

The sales giant has expanded its space to over 100,000 square feet to cater for the new employees.

AMAZON HAS MORE than 300 jobs going at its Dublin base, so many that it has had to expand its offices.

It said today that the highly-skilled roles include datacenter technicians, software engineers and customer support staff. They will be hired over the next two years and will be based out of Amazon’s offices in Ballsbridge, Dublin.

More room for employees

Amazon has expanded its office space, bringing it to over 100,000 square feet with room to further grow the number of employees in Dublin.

Today’s news also comes as Amazon celebrates the start of its tenth year in Dublin. It says that since September 2004 it has invested over €1.5 billion in the local economy.

“Amazon has been an active contributor to the Dublin technology community for a decade and during this time, we have been extremely impressed with the creativity and strong technical talent available in the country,” said Dr Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer, Amazon.com.

“Amazon has been an integral part of the Irish technology community for many years and we welcome today’s announcement of 300 new jobs created in Dublin,” added An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD.

People looking to apply for one of the roles with Amazon in Dublin can apply online.

Action plan for jobs

Also today, the Government announced its third progress report for the Action Plan for Jobs 2014. Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that on average, over 90% of measures set out in the Action Plans to date have been delivered on time within the specified quarter.

If a measure slips for some reason, we acknowledge it and we come back to it in subsequent quarters until it gets done.

“This quarter, we have delivered 88 specific measures out of 100 that were scheduled for delivery. Some of the measures are large and impactful, others are smaller steps towards a larger goal,” he said.

He said that these included publishing the National Entrepreneurship Policy Statement; the competition for Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur; and launching the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland.

It also includes 50 new research partnerships between companies and colleges, involving funding of some €5.7 million, and a second tranche of research centres announced by Science Foundation Ireland.

Work has begun on the Action Plan for 2015, and the Government has set itself a target of an additional 100,000 jobs by 2016.

I never knew they had a base in Dublin , why do I get so many “we don’t deliver to Ireland” messages when I get to the end on an order ;-) . Btw “going” is not the best term, I thought there were axing jobs on first reading the headline

Amazon’s Ireland base is purely tech related. Software engineers and data centre employees primarily. All of which is very much separate from the hub where you buy TVs etc.

That appears to be to do with postage restrictions on materials and certain types of product (Royal Mail or an post I can’t say for sure) – it’s nuts though. Overly strict.

Amazon is connected to 1000′s of shop sellers, they are usually the one’s that don’t deliver to Ireland. Eg: a computer shop in London could have his own shop through Amazon, it’s up to that shop if he wants to deliver to Ireland. There’s always a seller’s info link on the Amazon product page. If the product you wanted to buy was an actual Amazon product Amazon would deliver to Ireland, if the product was the sellers own product sold through the Amazon website that’s where it’s up to the seller to set if he delivers to Ireland or not. Pain in the hole i know as i buy constantly through Amazon

The fleabay site tells you right from the start if the items are not for delivery to Ireland instead of wasting your time by making you log in to find out. I have had chemicals and even a windscreen delivered by others so I no longer shop on the Amazon site.

The Dublin office is not part of the Amazon retail or distribution side. It’s primarily the Amazon Web services, Data Services and development division of the business. I use to work there and we would get people wondering up now and again I asking why their packages haven’t been delivered yet! Jeff Bezos has run to the shops to get more stamps, it should be with you in a few days.

Alot of it is due to consignment size and some companies will not pay for the charges for this, especially if they are a smaller operation. The company I work with deliver through DHL, costs are surprisingly high so I tend to despatch pallets as it is cheaper in the long run than loose boxes.

These jobs are all high end Tech jobs based in Amazon’s cloud infrastructure service’s AWS and EC2.
All are well paid jobs which require high caliber candidates so to see 300 being recruited over the next 2 years is very good indeed.

If you really can’t deal with the capitalist giants like Amazon, Google or Apple, then perhaps you should take a deep breath, quite your job (if you have one) throw away your smart phone, withdraw all your money from the bank and go live up a tree or an abandon bus in Alaska or some sh!t. I worked for this company so I can probably break down how this recruitment drive will work.At most of Amazons centers about 5% of the work force are technical. The rest are ‘customer service’ who give the impression that they are tech support and who only take queries, sort out minor problems and pass any thing too difficult up the line into a queue. About 90% of design and implementation takes place in Seattle. Most of the jobs at the new op will require business fluency in another language. Now lets face it most Irish graduates with those language skills will have another dicipline aswell and will not be intrested in a glorified call center meaning that the jobs will have to go to overseas workers.Amazon in Ireland also has a bit of an issue with nepotisim.Any of the english speaking jobs will probably go to friends or family of those already working there through Amazons ‘recomend a friend’ applications being given priority.Internal promotions as based on who you know and not on what you know. All of the above contribute to very high attrition levels within the company leading to many of the managment level positions being occupied by those who have survived the longest and not those with any particular skill.300 jobs announced ? All in all I’d be supprised if 25 went to Irish people and would be very supprised if many of those people were with the company after 2 years. The promise of 300 irish people being employed in hi tech jobs will not bear out.
